A DREAM COME TRUE

When you were little, did you daydream about becoming pop stars?

Darren: Yeah - I used to get the old hairbrush out in front of the mirror! But it wasn't 'til I was about 13 that I realized not everyone wanted to do it and thought, Maybe this is a stupid idea.' We're still dreaming about what we're going to do...

Daniel: I've always dreamt about it too, but it only really began to seem possible when I met Darren. Neither of us could have achieved this without the other.

Did you tell everyone about your dreams?

Darren: No I didn't if we had to stand up in class and say what we wanted to do. When we were older, I couldn't say, 'I'll be a pop star,' because everyone would have laughed. But when I got a D in metalwork I'd think to myself, When I'm playing in Wembley, I won't need to worry about metalwork!'

Daniel: I didn't tell anyone, either. I thought it was better to do it first and then tell people, or every time they saw you they'd be saying, 'Hold on - thought you said you were going to be famous!'

How did you make it all happen?

Daniel: We just decided the band was going to be our nine to five job. Darren would come round to my house everyday and we'd try and write songs. They were some of the best times I've ever had 'coz it was a real challenge. We even soundproofed my bedroom with a load of mattresses so it felt like a proper recording studio!

Darren: It was like we were dreaming out loud! It was even better than having a Number One in America 'coz nothing stood in our way. It's like when you fall in love - the chase is the best bit!

How did you make a living while you were doing all this?

Daniel: I worked in a printer. I was supposed to be doing letterheads and business cards, but I spent most of the time printing tape covers for the band!

Darren: I worked in a video store - sometimes I had to rent dirty movies to old men - it was really embarrassing!
