Monarch Cave in Butler Wash

(Go to Vicki and Sheila's August/September 2005 Vacation main page)

Crossing Butler Wash near the carpark was a bushwacking nightmare because of the overcrowding of tamarisk (also known as Salt Cedar), but the destination was worth it. Monarch Cave is a .75 mile hike from the carpark with a 60' elevation gain.

Monarch Cave

Monarch Cave consists of a large amphitheater/cave and a long sloping bench leading up to it. Below is a pool of greenish water. There appears to be two partial towers at the ledge of the cave. We've only seen a few Ancestral Puebloan towers and they have all been on the mesa top. Another odd thing we noticed was toe holds on the gentle slope leading up to the cave where toe holds didn't seem neccessary. We've only seen toe holds on seemingly nearly verticle slopes. There is some water seeping out the sandstone in the back of the cave/amphitheater, perhaps it used to be a reliable spring. We saw lots of rock art prior to and at various places within the complex.
