San Rafael Swell

Due storms cutting short some of our planned hikes on the Cedar Mesa, we had couple days at for unplanned stops. We chose to check out the San Rafael Swell, in part because we had picked up a helpful publication listing self-guided driving tours. The San Rafael Swell has lots of Fremont and Barrier Canyon style rock art, whichare older than the San Juan style predominent on the Cedar Mesa.

Black Dragon Canyon There is a .2 mile hike from the carpark to the Black Dragon pictrograph panels. Some people suggest the large panel may have been part of an ancient calendar.




Cottonwood Wash/Buckhorn Wash Roads The Buckhorn Wash pictograph panel is Barrier Canyon style and at least 2,000 years old. Carpark is near the panel. We camped near Bottleneck Peak.




Head of Sinbad Pictograph Panel These pictographs are Barrier Canyon style and at least 3,000 years old. Carpark is near the panel.
