The Virginia Journal of Linguistics and Communication Sciences concerns itself with all of the topics and fields that are relevant to the study of verbal and non-verbal communication. The VJLCS aims to integrate the ongoing works of scholars of linguistics and communicative science into a larger discussion of the power of language and communication. Special emphasis is placed on transcending the divisions between disciplines in order to build a forum that is truly comprehensive.

Topics addressed in the VJLCS include, but are not limited to, matters of inguistic theory and analysis, anthropological linguistics, sociolinguistics, the evolution of language (and of specific languages), historical linguistics, discourse analysis, language and artificial intelligence, philology, developmental linguistics and language acquisition, philosophy of language, issues of translation, language education, language and communication in the media, psycholinguistics, field methods, language and cognition, nonverbal language, and specific language studies.

The VJLCS publishes academic works written by members of the University community (at both the undergraduate and graduate levels), some of which are solicited and many of which are received by way of University-wide “calls for submissions”. (Unsolicited pieces are reviewed by the Journal’s editorial board before proceeding to the publication stage.) Issues are published once every semester, and are made available both in print and on-line, at the Journal’s site. Future expansions of the Journal will include the addition of several regular columns, written by University faculty-members on topics pertinent to the ongoing studies of language and communication.
