I guess I haven't discussed the wildlife of San Jose
enough, note I say San Jose not Costa Rica. As I
haven't experienced much outside the city yet I can
only vouch for the local fauna. I briefly mentioned
the birds in Sabana Park who carry on long involved
discussions of their socio-political situations, but
did I mention the spy corps? Or how poorly trained
they are? Last week I was making my way innocently
through the park on my way to work. Along the way I
noticed one of the ducks following me, I stopped for a
moment to see what was up, the duck stopped and looked
at me. I began walking again, so did the duck. Now
realize the duck was smack dab in the centre of the
sidewalk, there was no cover for it whatsoever. After
a good 10 meters the duck veered off to the grassy
water's edge. Perhaps it was the ducks turn to tail me
and this one chose the sidewalk instead of
surreptitiously paddling along the bank. I wonder if
it trained with CSIS? It didn't look like a Canadian
duck, but then you never know with those sneaky
Canadian spies. :) I guess I should have known the
birds had it in for me with the dive bombing crow the
first couple weeks I was here. Looking back I should
have realized, all the signs of a Canadian spy mission
were there, from the dive bombing crow, who constantly
missed (happy for me) to the really noisy birds in the
park (I guess that part of the encrypted messaging was
effective as I don't speak bird). I bet they are still
compiling a report from when I first got here because
there is a huge bird convention every evening on the
island in the park lake when I walk home each evening,
probably deciding which courier pigeon company to use.
Before I had more visitors come I had to purchase an actual bed. I had previously bought a mattress so they wouldn't have to sleep on the tile floor. So I set out in search of an inexpensive bed frame. With Lynnethe's assistance this was actually accomplished with little fuss. I did discover that the cost of a used item is usually the same or more expensive than a new piece, don't ask me why, I have no idea. Of course for once the Tico's exceeded my expectations and not only were they on time for delivery, they were actually early. I arrive home at least 15 minutes before they were expected and they were already there waiting for me. Now visitors will have all the amenities, a real bed, a towel, and a view of the concrete wall in my back yard. Oh yeah, and some really cheap fruit. There was a bit of miscommunication regarding my birthday, I said the 21st, Lynnethe heard the 25th. She planned a party at the local American bar after work on Friday the 24th. Of course no one said anything to me all day (and I kept my mouth shut). It wasn't until we were in a cab that I told her. I spent part of the evening watching her get a tattoo on her lower back. I might add here that this is a very popular thing here, many women wear very short shirts that reveal their midriffs and very low hip hugger pants. No, the tatto isn't of a bird. There ended up being a party after work on the Friday, first a cake at the office then off to Macs American Bar for drinks where my boss had arranged for another cake (he didn't know about the cake at the office and had been out all day). I think I got my sugar intake for the month in one evening. My latest visitors were Byron and Yanti, I hadn't seen Byron for about 4 years so was a little worried about finding him at the airport but it all went smoothly. Of course they wanted to go out that night so I took them over to Macs for chicken wings and drinks to "settle them down". They got to sleep in the next morning (lucky them) while I trotted off to work. I had given them the number of one of the English speaking taxi drivers so they set off in search of their bus tickets to Monteverde for the next day then downtown to see the sights of San Jose. I recommended the Gold Museum (you may recall my long involved description of my trip there a few months ago) and Teatro Nationale. They have been to Monteverde to do the canopy tour, spent a week on the beaches in Guanacaste (Nosara Beach to be exact) and are now at the Tabacon Resort to check out the live volcanao (Arenal). They tell me they didn't see many animals when down at the beach, but saw a lot of birds. Sounds like they will be back for another visit again soon. |
