The video game industry is a multibillion dollar business. Also know as interactive entertainment and recreational computing it has change the way many of us entertain themselves. The computer and video game industry is a relatively new breed. But the video game industry is growing quickly with more companies hiring skilled people at many levels. Video game designers create ideas for new games concept including graphics and story lines. To get a job in this industry you need to have good imagination and computer and communication skills to develop games that are interactive and entraining. The industry didn't began to develop until the 1960s and 1970s when computer programmers at some universities, big companies, and government labs began designing games on mainframe computers. Steve Russell was perhaps the first video game designer-in 1962, when he was in college, he made up a simple game called Spacewar. Nolan Bushnell, another early designer, played Spacewar in college. In 1972 he put the first video game in an arcade.
Some of the first video games were different versions of flight simulator games "graphics of space ship flew through a starry sky on the video screen, the object of the game begin to shoot down enemy ships"(Ecvg). Bushnell later created Pong, it was a big hit. Bushnell's company, Atari made games with text-based descriptions also.
You don't need  college degree to be in this industry but it is a plus. Having a degree shows that you have been involved in creative work and that you have advance knowledge of programming and software engineering. "Being a huge fan of video games always helps."(Pcgamer) Keeping up with technology is important also. You also need to learn a programming language like C++ or Java. Try and get as much knowledge about computers( how they work, and how to program them. Classes you should take in college are: programming, computer architecture, software engineering, computer graphics, data structures, and mathematics.
People in the industry make about 30,000 to 75,000 dollars a year. It depends on if the industry is at a high or not. If not it can be devastating. If it is it could make you rich.
The industry has change a lot since the 1980s. There's all kinds of games out there. Some of the most popular games are: "RPG , Adventure , Edutainment , Simulation , Sports games ,Shooters ,Fighting , and Platform."(gamedev.net)
Computer and video game designers work in office setting. Some people work 24 to 48 hours in one shift. Most companies have sleeping areas for there employees. The industry is very competitive and many people find themselves under a lot of pressure.
To be successful in the game industry, like any other job, you need to be willing to put the hours while being incredibly focused. Just as with many jobs, to have better opportunities to advance your position and possibly earn more money you have to keep up with technology. In conclusion, the video game industry only looks like a promising career choice for some one who is into technology and interactive entertainment and really wants to be in the industry. It's not a easy industry to get in and it takes a lot of work that might seem boring to some. But it's worth it if you in up with a job you love.
