General information Situated in South-East Central Europe, north of the Balkan Peninsula, on the Lower Danube and bordering on the Black Sea, Romania lies between 43°37'07" and 48°15'06" Latitude North and 20°15'44" and 29°41'24" Longitude East, having a temperate climate (see the map).
Romania's territory features splendid mountains, beautiful rolling hills, fertile plains and numerous rivers and lakes. Foreign visitors consider Romanians among the friendliest and most hospitable people on earth. Romanians are by nature fun loving, warm, hospitable, playful, with an innate sense of humour.

Things to do and see in Romania The choice of activities and places to visit is extensive: you can ski, climb on the mountains or laze in the hot sun on the beaches at the Black Sea, you can walk among  beautiful  landscapes, where rivers run clear, or go boating to the Danube Delta. There one can see pelicans and other birds among floating little island. You can also enjoy the architecture, museums and galleries of the cities. You can see folk festivals, adorned village houses, decorated monasteries and many other fascinating castles and palaces. You can participate to first class opera and concert halls, permanent art exhibitions, fine museums and galleries.

Mountains Due to the Carpatians, the potential of Romania is extremely rich. That’s why the number of the mountain resorts was increased in the same time with the modernization works. You can walk or climb just about anywhere you like, both in winter and summer. The Carpathians Mountains provide a relaxing experience you will never forget. In winter skiing is the first attraction. The best-known of resorts are Poiana Brasov, Predeal, Paltinis, Borsa and many others, with chalet-like hotels and self-catering villas. In summer, the mountains are yours to explore, campsites are open, and hiking routes are well-marked. You may also riding, fishing,  playing tennis, biking and canoeing. Natural Reservations are numerous. Some, like the Retezat Mountains, have been designated as National Parks. Wherever you go in the mountains you will find memorable scenery!

Danube Delta At the end of the great river Danube's  journey from the Black Forest mountains in Germany to Romania's Black Sea coast, the Danube Delta is a natural paradise, composed by a network of channels, lakes, reed isles and sand dunes that now cover nearly 5,000 sq km. This amazing wetland is home to more than 300 migratory and permanent bird species; 160 kinds of fish that include caviar-bearing sturgeon and 800 plant families. The villages, crossed by the waterways  seem untouched by time. Cruises give passengers to see a panoramic view about beautiful landscapes. As a visitor you can also explore this natural silence and calm by boat. You can visit a village by the river and you may discover fishermen making their own version of fish soup over an open fire.

Cities and castles Among the famous medieval cities, it can name Brasov , represented by The Black Church, the ruins of the citadel, and the Old Town Hall. A trip to take from Brasov is to the castle of Bran, supposed to have been the home of Prince Vlad Tepes, who inspired Dracula's legend. The city of Sibiu is a very pretty town, with cobbled streets and pastel colored houses. The medieval city of Sighisoara it’s famous for the beautiful citadel. An other important city is Iasi, the home of Romania's oldest University and a centre of intellectual life. The best known monument of the city is the Trei Ierarhi Church, dating since 1639. In Suceava, you may find the ruins of Stephen's princely citadel on the heights near the city. Known as city of parks and gardens, and Romania’s third biggest city, Timisoara became the symbol of freedom during the 1989 Revolution. Heaving baroque town architecture, a lot of churches and  a famous University, it’s a very good experience to visit it.

Bucharest The capital of the country, is the nation's centre of cultural and economic life. Finding your way is easy in Bucharest. The underground network offers a covers most of the city. Here you will find majestic public buildings like the National History Museum, National Museum of Art, once the Royal Palace, Opera House, the splendid neo-classical building of the Romanian Athenaeum where you can listen very good symphonic concerts. It will interesting to see the colossus Parliament House, the second largest building in the world after the Pentagon. An other destination can be the open-air Village Museum in the Herastrau Park. Here you will find village architecture from all over Romania, including wooden churches from Maramures. In the middle of the city you can visit Cismigiu Park. Bucharest is surrounded by forests and lakes; ancient Palaces and Monasteries are set amongst them. You can also visit the elegant  Mogosoaia Palace, Snagov and Cernica Monastery.
