'Sound of Music' coming to Canyon Theatre Guild

NEWHALL -- The story of the von Trapp family, made famous in the feature film "The Sound of Music" starring Julie Andrews and Christopher Plummer, is coming to the stage at the Canyon Theatre Guild in Newhall.

The Rodgers and Hammerstein classic will be performed at 8 p.m. Fridays and Saturdays and Sundays at 2 p.m. May 23 through July 6. This is the final show of the guild's 2002-03 season.

"The Sound of Music" is directed by TimBen Boydston, with Jason Endicott as assistant director. It tells the story of a young postulant, Maria, as she becomes a part of the musical von Trapp family.

After being assigned as a governess to Capt. von Trapp's seven troublesome children, she befriends them, using a mutual love of music and soon wins over the children -- as well as the heart of the captain.

Many of the roles in this show are double cast to showcase a variety of actors and musicians. Playing Maria will be Jenny Fowler; the part of Mother Abbess will be shared by Laurie Morgan and Steph Moir; Sister Berthe, Mistress of Novices will be Marla Khayat; Sister Margaretta, Mistress of Postulants will be Olivia Barrella and Sister Sophia will be Michelle Smith.

Playing the part of Capt. Georg von Trapp is Ed Hill. Franz the Butler will be Will Fowler; Frau Schmidt, the housekeeper, will be Elizabeth Stockton.

The von Trapp children are Mary Deagon and Hannah Lively as Liesl; Daniel Barsky and Garrett Deagon as Friedrich; Kia Atsales and Jessica D. Stone as Louisa; Jake Fitch and Micah Lively as Kurt; Amber Hughey and Marcella Lively as Brigitta; Brooke Berman and Kara Hayes as Marta and Kailee Hall and Gail Megan Teagle as Gretl.

Playing Rolf Gruber will be Nathaniel Dobies and Ian Loveall; Baroness Elsa Schraeder will be Kathy Lively; the part of Max Detweiler will be shared by Jason Endicott and Darel Roberts; Herr Zeller will be John Daly; Frau Zeller will be Elizabeth Teagle; Baron Elberfeld will be Greg Hayes; Jenni Mabrie will play A New Postulant, Marc Deagon will play Admiral von Schreiber. The part of Mary Anne will be played by Zoe-Anne Fitzhugh and Eric Clarke will play both a Nazi soldier and a priest.

The production team includes Loren Burghout as Stage Manager, Michelle Smith as Musical Director, with choreography by Rena Bailey Barrett and Ingrid Boydston. Set design is by Jim Robinson and Boydston, and the scenic artist is Frank Rock.

Tickets for "The Sound of Music" are $16 and $12 for adults, and $12 and $9 for seniors and juniors (over age 62 and up to age 17). The Canyon Theatre Guild is at 24242 San Fernando Road, Newhall.

A special fund-raiser "Sing Along Sound of Music," at which the audience may participate -- in more ways than singing -- is scheduled for 6 p.m. June 8. Tickets for the that program are $25 for adults and $20 for junior and seniors. Ticket prices include light refreshments and "prop kits."
