Objective:              To introduce students to the nature of the course & how it will operate

Procedure:           

1.        Teacher takes attendance & hands out cards for students to fill out

2.        Teacher hands out course syllabus and outline

3.        Textbook distribution

4.        Show students Teacher Website on overhead

5.        intro discussion on how familiar they are with the law in America

Topic:                     What is Law?

Objective:              To help students discover what law is and what it isn’t.

Procedure:           

6.        check to see if books are covered and give out homework points accordingly

a.        give warning to those that don’t have them covered.  Next week they will be given an AM detention.

7.        PAPER CLIP GAME and DISCUSSION

8.        Complete problem 1.1 in the textbook page 5

9.        Power point slide show on What is Law? Up to slide #13

10.     case of the Shipwrecked sailor (5 points, write out answers)

Topic:                     What is Law?

Objective:              To introduce students to the U.S. Constitution and the role it plays in determining how Americans live their lives.

Procedure:           

12.     Finish PPT lecture on What is law?

13.     students have 10 minutes to study terms and prep for quiz 1

14.     students take quiz ( go over it in class)

15.     Students complete chapter 1 activity from student workbook and case of “apathetic bystanders” 1.6

16.     review both case of the apathetic by standers

Objective:              To introduce students to the idea of Human Rights and to breakdown the U.S. Constitution and how individuals may be affected by it.

Procedure:

Objective:              To understand that individual citizens can have an impact on lawmakers.

Procedure:           

23.     take students to the IMC or computer lab to conduct research in order to write to a lawmaker.

Topic:                     Settling Disputes

Objective:              To understand that there are many ways to settle disputes.

Procedure:           

41.     students brain storm times in their life when they had a dispute

42.     students then try to remember ways that they settled the dispute (if they did)

43.     Teacher lists / discusses the various ways of settling disputes

44.     students discuss the merits of each way of settling disputes and when each might be most effective

45.     teacher asks students to differentiate by writing down their responses to the differences among the methods (such as mediation versus arbitration)

Homework:           Trace, copy and color the map on page 55 showing the Circuit Court of Appeals and their numbers.  Also create 10 questions for someone else to answer by reading your map (include your answers)

Objective:              To understand how lawyers get paid, when you might need one, and what it actually means to have a lawyer (privileges).

Procedure:           

59.     DO NOW= collect HW and read pages 68-69 and write down the ways in which lawyers get paid
