Lesson 01
OBJECTIVE: Students will be able to
demonstrate knowledge of American culture by participating in a class discussion
about American folkways, mores, and laws.
PROCEDURE: Anticipatory
Set: If you had to name the most
significant part of
the American culture what would you say?
1. review of terms on board: culture, material culture, values,
taboo
mores, folkways, laws,
norms, sanctions (positive & negative).
2. class discussion as to how the above terms apply to the
American culture (and how they differ from others)
3. Journal
“In what ways has your culture affected
who you are today as a person? Please
provide specific details.”
4. students work in groups to list American values as they see them

Lesson 02
OBJECTIVE: Students will be attempt to view another culture using cultural relativism
instead of ethnocentrism.
PROCEDURE: Anticipatory
Set: Should plural marriages be allowed?

identify how significant language is to creating and keeping a culture and a
society. They will do this by
participating in a discussion on “how language creates culture.”
PROCEDURE: Anticipatory
Set: How might the American culture be different
if
the English language did not exist?
1. terms on board include Sapir-Whorf
hypothesis, language,
cultural diversity
2. students work in groups to list the importance language
plays in creating a society. (students begin with the
following statement in which they have to defend or prove true “language
allows culture to exist, if not for language culture would die out!”

Lesson 04
OBJECTIVE: Students will identify
how humans are socialized through family orientation and other agents of socialization
by comparing stories about what happens to humans if they do not have these
agents to socialize them.
PROCEDURE: Anticipatory Set: If an animal were raised as a human, to what extent would that
animal take on human qualities?

a child were to be raised in the wild.
