Chapter 1: The Sweet Past

A young boy stretched his foot so that it reached a small stride just below the window of a house across his own. He slowly steadied himself and switched his hold from the water pipe of his house to the window frame. He peeked inside and saw another boy sitting in front of a mirror. He raised the window and called.

“Oi, Toshiya!”

The said boy gasped and turned around. “Kaoru!”

The sight of the boy’s face made Kaoru burst out laughing, “What have you done to your face?! You look like a panda!!”

Toshiya’s face was covered with thick face powder, making him seem like he was wearing a mask of some sort. Huge black circles surrounded his eyes, of what appeared to be a mix of eyeliner and eye-shadow. He held a dark-colored lipstick in one hand, ready to be applied. He obviously looked like a panda.

“Wow, you’re only in your first-year of high school and you’re already aware of your appearance so much that you’ve started to use some make-up?”

Out of embarrassment, Toshiya’s face went red. He quickly snatched a tissue and rubbed his face in an attempt to clean it. Snatching another sheet of tissue, he glared at the older boy, “Why do you always have to appear from the window?!! Use the frickin’ door!”

“Why should I? I love this much practical and easier way, thank you.” Kaoru opened the window wider and walked inside Toshiya’s room. “Really, what were you doing?”

“I… I was trying to look like some musicians on the TV…”

“Heh, you should learn to play some instruments instead of copying their looks. Are you still learning drums?”

“No… it’s too hard for me.”

“You always say that it’s too hard for you! When will you be able to play in the same band with me, Kyo and Die? I’ve saved a place for you, you know, after I found out that you’re learning drums!”

“Who said I wanted to be in the same band as you?! Why are you here anyway?!” Toshiya frowned, visibly annoyed.

Kaoru looked at him for a while then spoke, “I just wanted to see you.”

Toshiya seemed to be surprised with this statement, and rather flustered actually. He looked at Kaoru to find any signs of further mocking, yet he found none. Toshiya threw his sight somewhere else. “Stop saying embarrassing things like that.”

“Why should I? It’s true, ne.”

The younger boy rolled his eyes, though a blush appeared. “You just love to tease me that much, huh?”

Kaoru grinned and sat on the bed behind Toshiya. He lazily opened one of the mangas scattered on the floor. He stole a look at Toshiya, but the other boy was still occupied with cleaning his face. “Tomorrow’s your birthday, right?”

“Yeah.”

“Wanna celebrate with me?”

Toshiya looked closely at the mirror to see if there was any make up left. Apparently, he wasn’t able to clean his face thoroughly. He groaned and rubbed the tissue against his face again. “Why should I? I’d rather celebrate with my family.”

“Not with your koi?”

“I don’t have one if you haven’t noticed baka, unlike Die and yourself who are screwing around like crazy. I really don’t know what those girls see in a person who peed on his neighbor.”

“Hey! That was a long time ago! I’ve changed.”

“Yes, you met a wonderful piece of technology called the toilet, so now you don’t pee on anyone else anymore.” Toshiya couldn’t hold back his smile when he said that.

“No! I mean… yes, that too, and the screwing around part. I’ve changed.”

“It doesn’t have anything to do with me.”

Kaoru leaned closer. He spoke near Toshiya’s ears, “So, wanna celebrate your birthday with me?”

Toshiya turned around blushing again for now their faces were almost touching each other’s. Besides, it wasn’t like what he said wasn’t appealing. “…Is that an invitation?”

“What do you think?”

“It depends on the place and time.”

“Well, let’s see… Just come to my house tonight, near midnight.”

“Midnight?!”

“Isn’t it great? I’ll be the first person to say happy birthday to you.” Kaoru smiled.

“That’s silly. How am I supposed to get permission anyway?”

“I’ve talked to your parents.”

Toshiya rolled his eyes, “Doesn’t that make me sound like a girl whose boyfriend wants to take her on a first date or something? I should’ve remembered how much my parents like you. I hope you’re not planning on a conspiracy against me. Won’t I bother your family?”

“Nah, they’re going out of town, a relative’s wedding preparation and stuff. I begged so hard for my parents to not make me come.”

Then, Kaoru hesitated. His hand reached inside his pocket, but he wondered if he should give it to the other boy or not. Toshiya noticed the sudden change of attitude. “What now, Kaoru?”

Now or never…

“Close your eyes, Toshiya.”

Toshiya raised an eyebrow. “Huh?”

“Come on, be a good boy and close your eyes.”

Though his eyes still filled with confusion, he closed them and waited. He felt something being wrapped around his neck… He heard Kaoru telling him to open his eyes, and so he did. He gasped when he saw his reflection on the mirror.

“Ka-Kaoru!”

A necklace was hanging from his neck. From the silver chain entwined behind his neck, hung a pendant containing a stone which was of a striking blue hue. In the middle, there was a silver carving which was covered in shades of white. It was the most beautiful necklace he had ever seen.

Kaoru grinned at Toshiya’s reaction. “Look at the backside.”

Toshiya turned the necklace and saw TOSHIYA carved on the back. His eyes shone with disbelief and he turned to Kaoru.

“Kaoru… this is… I…”

“It’s an early birthday present. Do you like it?”

“Very much! Oh, this is so beautiful… I can’t believe you bought this! Did you really pick this one by yourself or did you ask Shin-chan to pick it for you?” he stared at the other boy accusingly.

Looked insulted, Kaoru defended himself. “Hey! I picked that one on my own! And the idea to carve your name was also mine! And that was not cheap, you know, the necklace itself and the carving. Don’t you think how nice I am—”

His words were cut by the sudden hug Toshiya gave him. A very tight hug. He could smell Toshiya’s shampoo. He could feel Toshiya’s hair tickling his nose, Toshiya’s hands behind his back. He could feel Toshiya’s smooth cheek touching his own. He felt himself blush. Almost hardened. bad Kaoru.

Toshiya loosened himself and smiled broadly. “Thank you, Kaoru. I really appreciate this.”

Seeing Toshiya’s face so close to his, so full of happiness, Kaoru almost couldn’t stop himself from blabbing out his feeling. But that would ruin his whole plan. “We-well… I still have one other surprise for you. Although, I don’t know if you will like the surprise…”

Toshiya saw Kaoru’s face soften, almost nervous. He also didn’t miss something trickled in the older boy’s eyes. “…Really? What?”

“Not so fast, you greedy boy”, Kaoru narrowed his eyes, the hint of nervousness was gone. “You’ll have to wait until midnight.”

“You meanie!”

“Sorry, but I have to make sure that you will come tonight so I won’t waste everything I have planned.”

“…You’ve planned something?”

“Don’t want to ruin the surprise, ne? Oh, I should go now.” Kaoru went back to the window. He flopped one of his legs outside and started to climb out. “See you tomorrow... or tonight.”

Toshiya turned swiftly and yelled, “Hey! I haven’t even agreed!”

But Kaoru had gone already.

Toshiya fumed. “What a bother.” Yet, a hint of smile appeared on the pretty boy’s face.

************

“Oy, Kaoru!”

The said boy turned around and saw a friend of his running towards him. “Yo, Die.”

“Have you asked Toshiya?”

“I just done it.”

“So? Did he agree?”

Kaoru let out a small chuckle. “Not exactly. I didn’t even wait for his answer.”

“But you just know he’ll come.”

“That’s my Toshiya.”

“Not yours yet actually,” Die grinned and poked Kaoru in the ribs, “Are you ready to tell him?”

“I guess… I think… I hope,” Then suddenly the confident look on his face disappeared. A nervous, worried look came back. “Maybe it’s not a good idea.”

Die rolled his eyes. “Oh, come on! We’ve been through this conversation so many times! And each time, all you said was it was not the right time! THIS is the right time.”

“How do you know it’s the right time? I mean—“

“BECAUSE,” Die gripped his friend’s shoulders and looked straight into his eyes, “You’ve been keeping it for three years.”

“I could keep it for some more time,” answered Kao stubbornly.

“Are you an idiot?! Look, haven’t you noticed how stunning had has become? No, don’t say anything like he’s always been stunning, I know you wanna say that, but shut up for now.”

“No, what I want to say is, I don’t want you to keep saying that he’s stunning ‘cos I’m the only one who can say that.”

“Fi~~ne, geez, you’re such a geek,” Die sighed, “If you don’t tell him now, he’ll be taken by another person soon. You just said it yourself, no one except you can say that he’s stunning. So make him yours. Soon.”

Kaoru bit his lip.

“Kaoru! This is his birthday! The perfect time for the perfect surprise for him! He’ll be crying with joy and hugging you then you can go kissy kissy and screw—“

“DIE!”

“—make love to him… oh, stop blushing like an idiot. And anyway, good luck. If you don’t do it, I’m gonna punch you in the face.”

“But what if he gets mad and rejects me?” Kaoru sighed, but made a pained face as Die just gave him a smack on the head.

“Just quickly confess to him and save me from your blushing-at-each-other attitude every single time your eyes meet.” Die contemplated for a second and frowned. “Wait, you two getting together would actually give me more headaches with your newlywed pheromones… You’re not going to call him ‘darling’ or ‘pumpkin’ or ‘honey bear’, right?”

“YOU were the one who called your dates ‘darling’ and ‘pumpkin’ and ‘honey bear’ and only God knows what other disgusting names!”

“Yeah, whatever, just confess to him, will you?!! You two are so obviously in love with each other! Why are you two so oblivious to it?”

Kaoru stared with a hint of disbelief. But when he saw Die raise his fist to give him another smack, he quickly nodded and made the smart decision to change the topic. “Where are you going?”

“Going to Shin-chan’s. I’m bored. Teasing him would be a good distraction from what I’ve been through,” Die rolled his eyes, “Just broke up. Not that I feel sad or anything, that girl was just tiring me out earlier with her screams.”

“Ah, a new record, only two days.”

“Can’t help it! She’s so annoying! She kept saying things like ‘don’t go out with them’, ‘don’t look at that girl’, ‘don’t do this and that’!’”

“Someday, you’ll find someone who you love so much,” Kaoru laughed, “Then suddenly, all of your confidence will just leave you, and you will do anything to make that someone happy.”

Die merely snorted. “Don’t try to put me into the same situation as yours.”

************

The bell rang and Kaoru paced to the front door. He heaved in a deep breath, cleaned the invisible dust from his clothes, patted his hair, and decided that he was acting like a lovesick idiot. But then again, he is madly in love with this certain boy that was currently waiting for him to open the door. Not wanting to make him wait any longer, he swung the door open.

“Hi. Hello. Toshiya,” Kaoru smiled nervously. He watched stunned when the other boy returned his smile and walked inside. He stood awkwardly for a while, whilst Toshiya stayed silent, waiting for Kaoru to say something. When he didn’t, Toshiya raised an eyebrow.

“Kaoru?”

Kaoru snapped out of his mesmerized state and grinned like an idiot. He shrugged, “Well… Did you get lost on finding your way here?”

Toshiya stared at him with an incredulous look, “Kaoru, your home is right next to mine.”

“Oh, yeah, right.” Silence filled the room again before Kaoru decided to stop making a fool of himself. “I… made something for you.”

Toshiya didn’t have the time to ask as the older boy dragged him towards the dinner table… dinner table? What on earth…

“Kaoru! You cooked?!!”

************

“Aaah… That was great! I didn’t know you could cook!” Toshiya patted his belly as he sat down on Kaoru’s bed leisurely.

“I can’t,” Kaoru replied, placing himself next to the other boy. “I just learned that from a cooking book my mom had. Secretly, of course. Don’t ever tell her, okay.”

Toshiya giggled, knowing exactly how much racket Kaoru’s mother would make if she found out her unreliable son could actually pour the salt with the right amount into the food, “Okay. I was pretty surprised to see all the food you prepared were my favorites.”

“I’m quite an observer, thank you.” Kaoru grinned. “Besides, it’s your birthday, so I decided to give an extra effort.”

“Well, thank you. I guess I’m that special.” Toshiya grinned back. He looked around and saw a guitar next to Kaoru’s desk. He reached out and touched it slightly, “Hey, it’s been a while since I heard you playing the guitar.”

Kaoru glanced at the guitar and switched to his thinking mode, “Hmm… I couldn’t recall playing in front of you since that one time that I bought a new guitar and wanted to show-off.”

“Na-ah, not that long. You must’ve not realized that I actually listened whenever you play the guitar in your room.”

“What?? You heard??”

“Of course, baka! Your room is right in front of mine! And you played like a madman! You practiced almost every night. Heh, you didn’t even care about other people who wanted to study or sleep. Or whether your playing sucked or not.”

“I… Well…” Kaoru scratched his head, a little flattered by the fact that Toshiya listened to him guitar playing. Then his face fell, “…My playing sucked?”

“Don’t make such a face! I just mocked you. I think it’s really good. At least after you had practiced,” Toshiya tilted his head to the side, making Kaoru realize how tempting his neck was. “Really like to play the guitar, huh?”

“Yeah…” Kaoru gulped and averted his gaze to the guitar. “It has always been my dream, you know, to be a famous musician. And I thought…” Kaoru gulped again –‘Stop gulping, baka!’— his eyes went to Toshiya’s “…that maybe you could be next to me as I pursue that dream.”

‘Now that sounded cheesy. Brilliant selection of words, Kaoru.’

The clock on his table let out a sound, signing the midnight had arrived and the day had changed. Kaoru piled up his courage and leaned in, watching the other boy’s startled eyes as he went closer. He kissed him quickly, enjoying the taste of Toshiya’s soft, delicate lips for a slight time. Then he pulled back, not wanting to scare him off, and smiled, “Happy Birthday, Toshiya.”

Toshiya stared at him, confusion filled his eyes. His mouth went opened and shut again. He touched his lips with one hand and started to speak, “W-what was that about?”

“It was a kiss.”

“I know! But… why did you do that…?”

“Because I like you.”

“I’ve told you to stop joking around like that, Kaoru…”

“I’m not joking!” Kaoru gave him another quick kiss before Toshiya could react, “I like you, Toshiya, since like forever. I prepared all that food, and gave you that necklace, because this is your special night. And I wanted to make it a special night for us.”

“…You’re lying.”

“I’m not. I really like you. What should I say to make you believe me?”

“You’re lying!” Toshiya shouted, “Why is it so fun for you to make fun of me?! Stop this joke right now!! It’s not funny at all!!”

Kaoru’s heart dropped hearing Toshiya insisting so much. He felt like he saw the rejection on the other boy’s face. He felt mad. Mad at himself for telling Toshiya his feelings. He should’ve held himself back. He saw the other boy turn his head away, his bangs hiding his pretty eyes. He clenched his fist and attempted to convince him again, “Toshiya, I’m not making fun of you.”

“No… no… you didn’t really mean it…” Toshiya shook his head repeatedly.

“I like you.”

“Don’t say things you don’t really mean. Please, just stop this joke right now. If you think this is funny, then fine. Let’s laugh, okay? The joke’s over, now you can laugh, then I’ll follow you right after.”

Now Kaoru really felt mad, hurt, and disappointed. All his feelings, his efforts for Toshiya tonight… everything they had shared together, after all this time… meant nothing to Toshiya except for something to laugh about.

Feeling frantic, he grabbed Toshiya’s shoulder roughly and shook him repeatedly, “IF YOU WANNA REJECT ME, JUST SAY IT, DAMMIT! YOU’RE THE ONE WHO THINK THIS IS FUN—“

His words were stopped by the sight he was seeing. Tears filled Toshiya’s eyes, the boy seemed to be trying his hardest to hold them back. However, when Kaoru touched his chin to turn his face towards the older boy, the tears fell rapidly.

“Toshiya…”

“I’m sorry. I’m really sorry. You can laugh at me later for acting so weird. I’m such a crybaby, that’s why you just like to tease me, right? But stop this joke, ok?” Toshiya laughed half-heartedly, then his face fell again, “It hurts me too much.”

“Hurts you—“

“I like you, Kaoru. Really, really like you.” Toshiya sobbed, his hand wiping off the tears. He looked up to Kaoru hesitantly, watching as Kaoru froze, unable to say a word. He forced a cracked smile and pushed the other boy slowly, attempting to free himself. “Ah, I’ve said it. I’m sorry, you don’t have to think about it. I’m fine with the way things are. You don’t have to feel guilty or anything over your joke. I mean, it’s just me and my stupid sentimental—“

Feeling his chest tightened, Kaoru couldn’t hold himself anymore and lunged forward, locking the other boy’s full lips with his own. This time, the kiss was longer, filled with thicker emotion. He desperately needed Toshiya to understand his feelings.

His heart fluttered when he felt Toshiya responded to the kiss.

After only-God-know-how-long, Kaoru broke the kiss unwillingly. He brushed Toshiya’s bangs away from his face with one hand and wiped off the rest of the tears with the other. Then, both of his hands rested comfortably on Toshiya’s smooth cheeks. He stared at him deeply and said, “I like you.”

Toshiya’s eyes watered again. Kaoru was afraid that Toshiya would still deny his feelings. Nonetheless, Toshiya whimpered, “…Really?”

Kaoru smiled and kissed him again, “Really.”

“You’re not joking or saying that out of guilt?”

“I like you, Toshiya.” Kaoru said again, giving a pressure this time so that he could convince Toshiya.

Toshiya threw his arms around Kaoru and cried loudly. “I’m sorry, Kaoru! I thought you were just making fun of me like usual… I thought… I was really afraid that… I like you too…”

“Shh… I understand…” once again he kissed the naive boy, slowly pushing him down on his bed until Toshiya lay flat on his back.

Toshiya trembled a little, somewhat frightened by what was coming up next. Nonetheless, he just let the older boy do whatever he was doing right now. Kaoru noticed Toshiya’s innocence and willingness to give himself to Kaoru. This made Kaoru’s heart thump faster, and he could barely control himself.

As the kiss got even deeper, Toshiya moaned. Kaoru used the chance to slip his tongue into Toshiya’s mouth. Once again the other boy moaned, breathlessly calling Kaoru’s name this time. Toshiya stroked his hand to Kaoru’s hair and pushed his head so the kiss could only get more intense.

They were lip locking with their tongue tied for some time. Kaoru bit Toshiya’s lower lip tenderly before finally he broke the kiss just so he could move his lips down Toshiya’s jaw line and make the younger one panted breathlessly. He bit down on some flesh and the other boy tilted his head back in pleasure. Kaoru took this as a chance to kiss his neck fiercely and suck the pale skin on it.

“Ahh, Kaoru,” Toshiya writhed. His hand stroked Kaoru’s hair even deeper, unconsciously urging Kaoru to kiss him even harder. And it was exactly what Kaoru did, he sucked it even more rigorously. He was quite sure it would leave some obvious mark on Toshiya creamy skin. But then again, that was his intention, to let the whole world know that this boy was his.

He slipped his hands under Toshiya’s top, feeling the smooth skin beneath. He slowly pulled the material off of the other boy so he could get better access to savor Toshiya’s body, noticing Toshiya’s adorable pinked cheeks along the way. He kissed those cheeks and rubbed both of the pink nipples with his thumb. The other boy arched back and bit down his own lip to prevent a scream as Kaoru did that.

“Don’t hold it back… I want to hear your voice,” whispered Kaoru in Toshiya’s ear. The younger one shook his head, he was blushing so hard.

“Fine, if you don’t want to,” But that didn’t mean Kaoru let it just pass. Instead, he forced Toshiya’s lips to kiss him again so he couldn’t shut his mouth anymore. His hands were still doing the treatment to Toshiya’s buds as he did that. Toshiya moaned into Kaoru’s mouth and arched his back even further.

Kaoru licked Toshiya’s neck once again, trailing downward until he found the nipple he’d been rubbed ferociously. He licked that bud. Toshiya screamed his name, which triggered him to do even more that just lick it.

He nibbled it. Toshiya clenched Kaoru’s back tightly. And Kaoru could feel something hard pressed against his belly from behind a pair of offending jeans, just as hard and as hot as his own he supposed.

The older man pulled away slightly to enjoy the view under him. A hard, blushing, writhing Toshiya who didn’t dare to look at him, with kiss marks that contrasted his creamy skin. It was a perfect sight for Kaoru.

And then he glanced at the particular necklace that laid on Toshiya’s neck.

“The necklace I gave you, it really suits you, you know. It matches perfectly to your skin, especially with all the kiss marks you got from me,” he couldn’t help not to chuckle and reminisced about what he had done to that particular part of skin.

Toshiya pouted. He felt really, really embarrassed by this situation. He was half-naked, flushed, aroused, was writhing, and being utterly submissive as he didn’t know what to do. But then again, he knew Kaoru didn’t mind. In fact, he felt Kaoru’s smile as the older man’s nose and lips nuzzled against his belly.

Kaoru continued to kiss and nibble his skin every now and then a long the way down until he reached Toshiya’s pants. Kaoru placed his hand just an inch away from Toshiya’s pants, indicating his intention to slip his hand into it.

“May I?” he asked for Toshiya’s permission. However, he didn’t want to make his friend freak out about it.

Toshiya knew his particular member down there was throbbing and just needed Kaoru’s treatment to make it better. But, “Kaoru… I’m a boy,” he said in a low voice as he looked away to hide his crimson face.

Kaoru couldn’t help but chuckle. Toshiya regretted his words, feeling that he had humiliated himself, and covered his face with both of his hands. Kaoru pushed himself up and peeled the other boy’s hands open and kissed his nose.

“Do you think I didn’t know about that when I confessed to you? But still I confessed, right?” He kissed the soft lips. “I love you, you know. Be mine, ne?”

Toshiya looked back at Kaoru, he didn’t say anything but his eyes watered. “So, may I?” asked Kaoru once again, putting his hand on the fly of Toshiya’s jeans. The other boy just nodded and they kissed again.
