Second Train

Sunday Getaway

Shinya and I had been involved in a unique relationship for about four months now. Despite our separated educational institute, we managed to acquaint each other better through amicable chat at station or our way home on train. Shinya was also arranging weekly outing for bond strengthening named “Happy Sunday”. The gist of our activity was to travel to various kinds of destinations, ranging from popular teenager’s havens to antiquated geek’s sanctuaries, from Indies’ bands club to prehistoric museum. It’s not impossible to hang out on Osaka’s hippest mall this week and botanical garden the next. As bizarre as the venue selection might appear, somehow Shinya was able to make a sixty million years old Parasaurolophus’ skull or an extinct Egyptian palm’s specimen seemed truly engaging.

One thing never changed though, somehow he always cunningly succeeded of scheming the picnic’s destination and I always helplessly deferred to his wish.

Let me provide you one example that occurred three months ago.

“Die, what’s our today’s menu?”

“Mm… I think Tom Hanks’ new flick is nice”.

“But I think Gauguin’s collection is much nicer…Besides, I need to write a review on his paintings for my Art homework…It’s due on Tuesday, you know…”

He advised with his trademark ‘pushy-puppy-eyes’ and ‘adamant-jacket-tugging’ gesture, and boy, did the tender-hearted me have other choices than yearned?

“…Fine, as you wish, we’ll go to gallery. If we still have extra time, we will go to cinema”

“Yea~… What are we waiting for? Let’s leave then!”

… I ended up enjoying that movie two months later on a rented video.

That scene above was Shinya’s original modus operandi: to demurely initiate a dialogue, cleverly govern me to obey his intention by launching infallible persuasion and gloriously win over our one-way conference.

During our interesting friendship, he always gained triumph over our discussion, but once in a month, he allowed me to settle my choice without objection.

This seventeenth week was my prerogative to freely decide our getaway.

“Die, since this week you’re having the liberty, where do you prefer to visit tomorrow?”

“Tomorrow would be very nice to go…nowhere”

He powerfully smote my head

“Be serious, okay?! Use your privilege wisely”

“That savage hit could decrease my IQ, you know… Fine then, I want to go to…a disco where sexy girls are congregating…”

“Diiie…” From his raising tone, I could tell his minute patience was growing thin.

“Hey, relax, Shin! We’ll manage about it tomorrow, okay? You’re so pushy today… We never really devised our ‘Happy Sunday’ on the day before. What’s up this week, eh?” I jocosely elbowed him, curiously digging confidential info but he darted his gaze away

“I want to celebrate something special tomorrow…”

Obstreperous noise of arriving train dubbed his indistinctive murmuring.

“Eh, what?! I can barely hear you! Officer Die requests comrade Shinya to repeat, copy!” I positioned my earlobe adjacent to his mouth.

“… I want to execute a hearing impaired piece of redhead, copy”

“Operator informs me that was not your previous sentence” I shammed annoyance.

“…Oh, forget it, you shall wait and see tomorrow” He wagged his right hand. A trace of gloom laced his deep timbre, but since he was exhibiting his usual façade, I thought I was just being over sensitive.

“Get into the train now, lagger! And please consider a brighter idea for tomorrow!” He propelled my back and guided both of us to enter our pick up transportation.

“My pick will still remain a spicy dance club jam-packed with skimpy-outfitted girls …” I peered at him through my right scapulae

“Try a more civilized place, pervert”

“Daisuke, we will visit Grandpa and Grandma this morning” my Mom calmly announced as she sliced a crisp zucchini, her apron-tied back facing dining table where I feasted on my morning meal.

Breakfast of toast with blueberry jam abruptly obstructed my throat. Hurriedly grasping my glass, I imbibed massive gulps of orange juice.

“Hack, hack!… What, Mom?!”

She revolved and squinted her onyx eyes, her glistening knife, whether coincidentally or not, pointing upwards

“You’ve heard me clearly, Daisuke. We rarely come around to see them so they must be expecting our visit. Besides, you barely spent your spare time with us”

I toughly swallowed mixture of coagulated saliva and solid toast. The highest priestess had condemned me guilty for devoting zero percent of quality time with my own family during the last four months while on the other hand, expending one hundred percent of it roaming around Osaka with an enticing new best friend.

My promise with Shinya was definitely important, but this occasion was surely more urgent (and unavoidable, if you considered killer flicker on my Mom’s eagle eyes…)

“…Okay, I’ll come along then. I’ll prepare myself in a jiffy” I finished my meal and abandoned the table, idly sauntering toward my bedroom with chaotic contemplation.

Great, Die. What should you do now? Shinya was surely going to butcher you for canceling such significant appointment… in the most merciless and ruthless fashion (ul33: poor Die is being paranoid…^o^)

Cold beads of perspiration dampened my forehead. Truth was, I actually heard his blur statement about some remarkable event yesterday. Horrible imagination of his berserk mode when I annulled our tryst was capable to release shudders throughout my entire figure.

The house phone suddenly rang and I almost jumped out of my skin from the shock. I accepted a weird notion that the call was from Shinya. Staring at the device in petrification, I hesitated for few further rings.

“Daisuke, pick up the phone, will you?” my Mom’s alto commanded from kitchen.

“Y-yeah, Mom…”

My hands were strangely trembling in Parkinson syndrome I never knew I possessed.

“…Moshi-moshi… Andou residence…”

“Die, is that you? It’s me, Shinya!”

Okay, somebody please murder me now… anybody but Shinya, the Daisuke slayer.

“…Sh-Shinya? Hehe… What’s up?”

“Die, you sure you are awake? News flash, today is Sunday! Geez, you’re turning senile unbelievably early, Die!”

I’m dead; I’m a dead senile Andou Daisuke… Hand me any potent weapon to cease my misery, quickly…

“Um…Shin …I don’t think I can meet you today…”

“YOU CAN’T???!!”

“I’m so sorry… Apparently, my parents arrange sudden visit to my grandparent’s house in outer town today. As much as I prefer to attend our meeting, I can’t be absent on this agenda”

“…Oh, is that so…?”

Awkward hesitation danced at our conversation’s interval as Shinya fell silent on the other line.

“…Shin?... Are you still there?”

“… Eh? Yes, I’m still here…”

“I’m sorry! Pleeease forgive me~!… Ah, tell you what, the whole month’s destination is all yours to decide and I won’t utter any objection to your authority!”

“…No, really, you don’t need to, Die. You better go with your family. I’ve been stealing your leisure time from them too often. I’m fine, your grandparents should be prioritized”

The reception speaker conveyed Shinya’s weak assurance to my hearing. His voice was laden in somber lexicon I couldn’t quite translate.

This was one of the reasons why I assented to his intentions. Besides being a year older and fully conscious about the obligation as more mature adolescent to nurse the younger (ahem), I perceived that he was concealing his fragile self within his headstrong, domineering front. Sometimes even when we laughed, I descried his golden orbs blanketed in unspoken solitude. This pondering made me felt even guiltier to desert him relishing the day alone.

“Is it really okay if I go…?”

“…What? Of course it’s okay! Lacking one dolt like you won’t ruin my weekend! But you ought to bring me a compensation souvenir! It better be an expensive one or our next week pick will be a soporific opera show!”

“Yes Ma-am! ...Oh, my Mom is calling; I have to hang up now! Bye then!” I ended the connection for my mother had commanded me to don proper outfit immediately.

Few miles away from my presence, light-years away from my acknowledgement, a pensive youngster whispered dejectedly

“I wish you were here today, Die… You’re my only getaway to make this loneliness go away”
