"More than 41,000 People Infected with HIV in Vietnam"

Associated Press (11.04.01) Vietnam has 41,030 people who have tested positive for HIV, a health ministry official said Monday. As of the end of September, 6,138 people were known to have AIDS while another 3,372 had died from the disease since the first HIV case was detected in 1990. The official said 7,047 people were found to be HIV-positive in the first nine months of this year, while there were 941new AIDS patients and 521 deaths from the disease during the period. About 60 percent of the confirmed HIV patients are drug users. The government spends about $4 million a year to fight AIDS. The money is being used to buy test kits, ensure safe blood transfusions and raise public awareness.

Seven people in Vietnam charged with involvement in baby trafficking ring

By Associated Press, 11/23/2001 05:59

HANOI, Vietnam (AP) Vietnamese prosecutors have charged seven people with helping a baby trafficking ring that sold 39 infants to foreigners for adoption, an official said Friday. Six of the people were charged with baby trafficking, while a former police officer was accused of taking bribes to tamper with evidence, the official in Ho Chi Minh City's prosecutor's office said. Police also issued an arrest warrant for one defendant who is still at large, the official said. The Nguoi Lao Dong (Laborer) newspaper said the ring bought the 39 babies from impoverished families for about $400 to $650 each and sold them for adoption to foreigners for several thousand dollars each in 1996-98. The trial should have begun in 1998, but was put on hold when one defendant accused a police officer of accepting a bribe of $1,060 and a mobile phone worth $430 to alter evidence.

Police initially investigated 16 people in the case, but later dropped their probe of eight because their offenses did not constitute crimes.

Last year, courts in the southern province of An Giang and northern province of Ninh Binh sentenced 21 people, including local government officials, to jail terms of up to 20 years for involvement in separate cases of child trading for foreign adoption.

Over the last decade, more than 10,000 Vietnamese children have been adopted by foreigners.

The government banned all foreign private organizations from acting as mediators for foreign adoptions in August. It is working on a decree that would allow only foreigners from countries which have special adoption agreements with Vietnam to adopt Vietnamese children.

CONGRESS POSED TO ACT ON BILLS WITH SWEEPING CONSEQUENCES FOR IMMIGRANTS: WEIGH IN NOW ON THIS FAST TRACK LEGISLATION:

ACTION NEEDED - We need you to contact the Senate Leadership's Offices as soon as possible to:

1) Affirm that as a fellow American you stand by principles of freedom and basic liberty that must not be abandoned in undue haste to adopt an antiterrorism bill.

2) Convey that you understand that at the end of the day, a bill may pass but that you firmly believe that we must be sure that we have had a fair opportunity to examine and acknowledge the serious civil liberties issues that are implicated by this legislation. Problems with this bill must be given a chance to be fixed.

3) MOST IMPORTANTLY therefore urge that this bill not be rushed for a vote on unanimous consent.

Vietnamese and Vietnamese-American households Survey (Posted 9 Oct 2001)

My name is Elizabeth Nguyen and I am a senior at Stanford University majoring in Human Biology. I am writing to ask for your help in my research study. I am currently working on my honors thesis which is comparing gender roles in Vietnamese and Vietnamese-American households. I was in Vietnam this summer and collected data for my project there, but now am trying to collect data from a similar group of Vietnamese Americans. I have devised a survey questionnaire that takes about half an hour to fill out and was wondering if any of you could take the time to fill it out for me? I was only able to get young adults in Vietnam to fill out the survey for me, so I unfortunately have to get a matching sample of only young adults here in the States. So what that means is, can you help me with my survey if you're under 35? Or if you have any young adult friends or relatives, could you ask them to help me too? The more data I get, the more accurate a representation this study will be.

You can access the survey at the following link:

http://www.stanford.edu/~eknguyen/Vietnam%20Survey/

Just click on the Vietnam Research Survey Link, and you can just email me back the answers when you're done. Thanks! I really appreciate all your help, and would be more than happy to answer any questions you might have about my study. Thank you so much for helping to further research on the Vietnamese community.
