The World Health Organisation declares an outbreak of severaly accute respiratory conditions a global health - April/March 2003. Five people died last month in southern China from pneumonia, and an American-Chinese man who flew to Hong Kong from Hanoi with pneumonia died on Friday morning 14 March 2003. A Vietnamese nurse who treated him in Hanoi's French Hospital died on Saturday 15 March 2003. The pneumonia outbreak is unusual in that it appears to strike a high number of doctors and other medical staff despite strict precautions being taken against infection when treating patients. Moves to close the China/Vietnam border have been in discussion as a way from preventing SARS from further spreading. ____________________________ Vietnam America Scholarships for 2003 The Institute for Vietnamese Culture and Education (IVCE) has been launching a Study Abroad in America program to help students in Vietnam pursue higher education abroad.
