Don't run away just yet.. you have to check out our awesome house. Watch out for nails and saw dust..
This is our 80 some year old house. We have a vast front yard (a park/zoo) and close neighbors on our corner lot in the city.

Instead of leaving this house the way it was (a rental pit of a house the landlord never worked on until he wanted to sell the house.. and then "work" is questionable), we decided to gut and rebuild it. You're looking at two people who would've laughed hysterically if you would've told them after a years work they'd know how to plumb, tile, insulate, cable, paint, structurally reinforce and refinish an entire house. We installed all the cabinets and even vaulted the ceiling in the sun room.
When you walk in our front door, you step from the foyer into the living room. In this picture, you can see the appearance of the slumlord err.. landlord to be hard at work. He's painted the crown moulding pink and is trying to patch the plaster with drywall. The hardwood floors (which you can't see very well in this picture) are black with years of dirt.
We got our hands on the house and decided it needed a major remodeling. Not only was there asbestos around the heating ducts, the electrical was knob & tube and no outlets were grounded, the plumbing was original galvanized, and someone had intelligently blown in insulation around the open wires. No wonder the neighbors reported the lights would flicker..
Currently, Doug's in the process of stripping, restaining and polyurethaning the first floor trim. I'm in the middle of making curtains. We just finished putting up the new interior doors.

Make sure to pull the front door real hard when you leave.. it sticks...
