1. Build An Opt-In Mailing List. This is a list of people that have given you permission to email them. With out a doubt this is a must. You can be informal and simply send a letter with some information that you think will be useful to your readers along with your sig file (see section below), or you can formalize it and call it an ezine with a specific format and objective. Either way, this list is gold! It is how you can repeatedly present yourself to your target market.

2. Write An Informatative Article. We receive articles every day from people wanting to publish in our ezine. Occasionally we will read one that we like and publish it. There are two very important points to improve your chances of getting published. First, don't send a sales letter. No list owner is going to publish your sales letter in his or her ezine. It has to be interesting and informative with your sig file (see section below) at the end. Second, don't be "off-topic". For example, in our ezine, we're only interested in marketing ideas. An article about your product would be "off-topic". Sure, products are important, but that's not what our ezine is about.

3. eBooks. eBooks are still popular despite the proliferation of books filled with junk. Make your own eBook and fill it with quality information, make it a worthwhile read. Sprinkle your ads throughout the book and then list it with the eBook directories.

4. Tell a Friend. Have some prompt in your ezine or script on your web page to encourage your reader to refer a friend.

5. Signature Files. Add the URL and a short description of your Web site to every e-mail you send by placing it in your "signature file". Tip: You can also use this method in message boards, chat rooms, guest books. It is also better to use an autoresponder address than a web page, because you will capture more leads that way. Check your email software to see how to set this up.

6. Newsgroups and Usenet. The direct approach : There are over 75,000 Newsgroups. Of these only a hand full accept blatant advertising. Only post your ad to groups that accept blatant advertising.

The indirect approach : Find groups that deal with your target market. Become part of the group, offer suggestions and ask questions. With every message you post, make sure it includes relevant information, and a signature file at the bottom.

7. Online Classifieds : There are truly millions of free classified ads sites. To generate traffic via classifieds you must use an ad that you have thoroughly tested and that you know works. You must also track every ad. Most classified sites generate no traffic, but if you are disciplined and systematic you can find and work the ones that do.

8. Search Engines. List your Web site with the search engines. There are many search engines available on the Internet, with more coming online every day. The process of registering is very simple, but can consume a large amount of time. This is especially true when you consider that you will probably need to resubmit your site on a regular basis.

Maintaining a top position is a difficult task and a never-ending one. For this reason, we don't bother with search engines. For those that do advocate search engines, their popular opinion suggests that you focus your attention on the major search engines. Excite, Infoseek, WebCrawler, Lycos, Alta Vista, Hotbot and Yahoo probably accounts for 80% or more of the searches performed on the Internet. Also, it is recommended that you avoid the myriad free submission services and take care of the submissions to these seven yourself, by hand. If you want to try the freebies for submission to the minor search engines, give it a shot, but your listing in the big seven is too important to take a chance on.

Always use meta tags on your site and especially index page. What do they do? When search engines add your homepage to their database, the first thing that they look for is a special tag with the description and keywords of the page. Place the Meta tag in the part of your document.

9. Joint Ventures. A typical situation for join venture is one party has a product and the other party has a list. The product is promoted to the list and the profits are shared. So to enter into a joint venture you need a quality product or a good size quality list.

10. Viral Marketing. Viral marketing is not a distinct method in it self, it is the result of effectively utilizing some of the other methods. For example, you have written such a great article that people share it around, hence viral marketing.

11. Discussion / Email List. An email equivalent of the Usenet (Newsgroups). As for newsgroups, some accept blatant advertising but most don't. For those that don't, you should make a genuine contribution to the discussion and add your sig file.

15. Free For All. FFA pages are a list of links that anyone can add to without paying a fee. With the introduction of automatic submission services that literally list your link on 1,000's of these pages, these pages have been rendered virtually useless. Why? Because you no sooner list your link then it gets pushed out of sight down the list. You are better served being an owner of an FFA page. This way you collect all the email addresses of the people posting to the FFA pages.
