After many posts requesting a battle and much twinking with my army i
have come up with a decent woodie army that only has 1, count em' 1,
traditional WE weapon, the Hunting Lance...no HoD, no Bow of
Loren...no Acorn of Ages...just a Hunting Lance...anyway...the battle
went as follows...as far as i can remeber.
Turn 1
Nick went first, he moved his units of Silver Helms (5) up, right in
the face of my Lord with Cloak of Mists (makes him an infiltrator),
and the other unit (5) was in the face of my Waywatchers. His magic
phase came up and he cast flaming sword of Rhuin on both his mages.
Shooting phase he shot with his RBTs, killing 4 archers...we passed
our panic test, it was all good.
My turn...charged the Silver Helms (5) infront of my Lord with the
Warhawk riders, which allowed my Lord to move to the side of his big
block (9) of Silver Helms. One of my Glade Rider units charged his
other Silver Helms (5), allowing my Waywatchers to move to try and
shoot one of his bolt throwers. My great eagles moved up, as did my
2 units of wardancers and my glade guards (damn spear elves finally
did something this game, as you will see later). Magic Phase...the
winds of magic hated me the entire game, the only spell i would ever
get off was howler wind, on turn 5 or 6, but it never mattered
anyway. Shooting...archers killed some spear elves, Waywatchers
uncharacteristcally missed, but my Forest Lord hurled his Hunting
Lance at the inviting flank of the Silver Helms, going through the
entire back rank (4 Silver Helms, for a 55 point magic item...i love
that thing!) leaving him with 3 silver helms and the 2 chars in that
unit...they passed their leadership test. Close combat ended up with
my Warhawk Riders killing 2 of the silver helms, my Glade Riders
whiffing like mad, its okay though, his Silver Helms did too. He did
no casualties to either unit, but his Helms decided to stick around.
Turn 2 - He declares a charge against 1 of my 4 archer units with
what remains of his formally big block of Helms...we stand and shoot,
his great eagle charges a mage, but comes up short, he moves around
his great sword unit and spear elves. The Silver Helms to my archers
fail as he rolls an 11 or 10 for his leadership test (he lost enough
for a panic test thanks to armour piercing arrows!), causing his
valaint Knights to run. His Repeater Bolt Thrower tries in vain to
kill the flapping doom approachig them, but only kills one great
eagle. Close combat ends up with him totally wiping out my warhawk
riders, and doing a wound to my Glade riders, but the Glade riders
still won combat (thank god for musicians), he breaks, we run him
down (6 6 and a 5 for distance).
My turn, the lone great eagle flaps in to hopefully engage and kill
the RBT crew, i move my Lord up to shoot at the fleeing Silverhelm's
flank again, basic positioning, i set up my second unit of glade
riders to what i think is out of charge range for his Swordmasters,
and move my first unit of riders to charge the other RBT in the next
turn, and set up my Glade Guard with my battle standard bearer for
charge next turn, with some wardancer flank support. Magic...squat
happens as normal for me this game. Shooting...Forest Lord and his
trusty Hunting Lance do it again, his Silver Helms, and the 2 wizards
in that unit die (HL did 2 wounds to one mage, 3 to the other),
Waywatchers/archers inflict minimal casualties to his blocks.
Turn 3 - Turns out i was wrong about his Swordmasters being out of
charge range...looks bad for my poor riders. He charges his graet
eagle into my mage. Moves his last unit of Silver Helms to charge
the side of my Riders if they stuck around...*Yeah right*. Moves his
Spear Elves in charging distance of my spear elves...YAY!.
Magic...his mages are dead. Shooting, in a last ditch effort he
tries to RBT his impending doom in the way of Glade riders...kills
2...i pass my test. Combat...his Elf Prince, with a great weapon,
and swordmaster virtue, whiffs twice and rolls double ones to
wound...then his sword masters all whiff or dont wound...except for
1...i take a wound...i fight back...i kill 4 elves...i had combat
banner...i win by 1, he tests, he breaks (who saw THAT coming?!). I
run him down, by 1! he rolled a 6 to flee and i rolled a 7. He does
a wound to my mage and chases her off the board (i didnt care, she
was doing nothing the entire game anyway, and i really didnt need the
1 d-scroll she had.
My turn. Charge my spear elves and wardancers into one of his block
of spearelves, he issues a challenge, my battlestandard bearer
accepts (shoulda had the champ accept damnit). Wardancers get the
flank as the front is taken (thanks Kyle for arguing that earlier
hehe) but it doesnt matter, skirmishers cant negate ranks right?
Charge my glade riders into his RBT. Move my Lord to shoot down the
last of his Silver Helms. Magic...nothin. Shooting...we do a wound
to the pesky great eagle. Silver helms all die, impaled on the
Hunting Lance. Close combat, much to my dismay i realize that the
darn challenge he issued was with a bad ass mofo, not some pissy unit
champ...my battlestandard bearer gets spanked pretty bad (takes 2
wounds). Spear Elves dont do jack, however, the award for total
death and destruction go to the wardancers...using the shadows coil
dance (looks like SOME skirmishers CAN negate ranks hehe) they kill 5
spear elves, meaning that they dont get to fight my wardancers back.
His attacks back kill one spear elf. Combat ends up, he did 3 wounds
total, and had a banner, i did 5 wounds, had a banner, had a flank,
had 3 ranks, and numbers...4 vs 11, he lost by 7, needed snake eyes
to stick, i almost had heart attack when he rolled a one, and we
were watching as the dice landed on a 2 or 3...if he had passed i
woulda had to kill someone. we chase after him, getting outta sight
arc of his last unit on the field (not counting that darn GE), the
wardancers are the ones that ran him down. His RBT crew runs off the
board.
Turn 4
Positioning on both sides, i forget to shoot the bird.
Turn 5
Bird Charges my unit of 4 archers. He does 2 wounds...i do one (bird
has 1 wound left for those keepin tally).
My turn, last block of spear elves is triple charged, front by
wardancers, left flank, by glade guard, right flank by wardancers,
who charge from the forest (and thus +1 attack). Needless to say
that unit is wiped out pretty hard. I think i lost one wardancer.
We added up V points...i gave up ~550 or so (mage, and half a unit of
archers, and half a unit of glade riders) and battle standard bearer
(87 base, but 100 for the battle standard...unless...he really didnt
capture the banner as we wiped him out and ran him down)...his entire
army was wiped out...if counted banner and quarters (i had all
quarters and i think 2 banners) it was a pretty solid win for me.
Mad props go to Nick who fought to the bitter end...sorry the dice
did nae love ya man...better luck next time my High Elf bretheren.
