First of all I want to thank Luke for organizing another great
tournament. I never would have guessed Saturday morning that I might
win best general. I have to thank my High Elves for the tactics;
eighteen months of playing them made me a better general. There is
no room for error with them as elf generals know all too well.
Game 1 – Versus Wood Elves: Colin played a tight game and had me on
the ropes for the first two turns. His regular shooting can wound my
chariots and he came real close to killing my Hierophant very early.
The turning point came in round three when my scorpion and swarm
popped up near his characters. Once his mages and heroes started
going down, the battle turned. Colin is right, the "My will be done"
ability is nasty, and it allowed me to charge his lord on the eagle.
The highlight for me as knocking his treeman around with the
Destroyer. Colin was a good sport even with things turned bad and I
had a good time. Result: victory with all objectives.
Game 2 – Versus Brettonians: Jason and I are roommates and always
draw each other. We are like Kirk and Khan, so I will give the
report in homage to Wrath of Khan.
We enter the scene as the Brettonians have dominated the left flank
with one unit of errants and peasants. The real battle is on the
right, where four units of chariots and the Tomb King's unit is
stationed. Across from him is a unit of errants, knights of the
realm and a unit of questing knights with the Brettonian Lord and
damsel.
Questing knight champion, "My lord, don't charge the tomb king's
unit! We have table quarters, you can have victory!"
The tomb king turns to his Hierophant, "Get me telepathic link with
the Brettonian Lord!"
A link is established and an eerie voice echoes in the Brettonian's
head, "Well you managed to kill everyone on the left flank, but you
haven't managed to kill me. You have to come here if you want to.
Brettonian... I am laughing at the superior armor save..."
"Full charge," screams the Brettonian lord.
"No sir!" The champion is desperate. "You have quarters! You can
have anything you want!"
"FULL CHARGE, DAMN YOU!"
The skeleton champion turns to the King, "Sir, why did they charge?
They will get flanked by chariots"
"Remind me to give you a lecture on concept of the Brettonian ego,"
quips the king.
The questing knights charge in and run down skeleton after skeleton.
The Tomb King raises his huge blade and points it at the Brettonian
Lord challenging him to a duel.
"Sir, the King wishes a duel! Surely your honor will be kept today
when you slay such a powerful creature," says the questing knight
champion.
"Er... right," Says the lord. "How about you take him on and I'll
keep killing the weak ass skeletons."
The champion looks at the lord in disbelief, "Sir..."
He turns to face the king, and charges in. He swings wildly at the
undead king, and then is knocked off his horse by the Destroyer of
Eternities. As he dies he looks upon the Brettonian lord, and his
last dying words are, "Your armor save is superior..."
***
Well, needless to say I won that combat when my two units of
chariots countercharged both of his flanks. Even still the game was
still a draw by 80 points. Regardless, my wizards stayed alive and
his was killed so I got max objectives again. Great game Jason! The
battle was so mentally draining though, that I was completely wiped
out for my third game. Result: Draw, with all objectives.
Game 3 – Versus Dwarfs: I played Sam, who is a brand new player. The
wacky diagonal deployment coupled with huge blocks of terrain made
our armies about a mile apart. I spent the whole game just trying to
get across the board. I killed one unit of thunderers, his canon and
engineer, and his stone thrower. I had three table quarters and
contested one. He got two of my chariot units. I would have liked a
more straight-up fight, but the scenario prevented it. Sam had a
good plan though; he hid his troops behind terrain and tried to
shoot me to pieces. He got my catapult with this canon, but then my
carrion, scorpion and swarm ended his war machine fun. Both of our
units were too slow to see much combat because we started six feet
apart due to the corners. Sam was a great sport, and I had a good
time. Result: Another victory and partial objectives.
I want to thank all of my opponents for a good time and the store
for the gift certificate. I hope you enjoyed my Star Trek humor.
