Results from the tourney:
The show wasn't as big as they said, there were 14
people that played, but that was still bigger than what Houston had for either
the OwlCon or the Marq-e store. I didnt see any faces I knew, although I think
I saw a guy from owlcon that played. As far as I know, I was the only guy from
houston.
The people up there were great. The store (central
command) was actually in a larger store called Purple mountain comics that I
gues shad been sectioned off.
Im not going to do full reports of the games,
partly due to the fact that I never remember the exact details (just the
larger picture) and partly because my elven like consitution is whooped
after 8 hours gaming and 6 hours riding.
GAME ONE:
Played an Orc army. Warboss (im guessing) on a
Wyvern. Three units of boys, a large unit of black orcs, a unit of big uns. A
battle standard was thrown in there, and there was a unit of wolf boys with a
character.
My list was pretty much the same one I had for the
Marq-e, with one fewer engineer and an added bell (the games were played at
2150)
The table sucked. There was way too much terrain,
and I luckly got to pick the more open side, but it still sucked for any such
as mine, and such as his.
The game was pretty much in my favor the entire
time. I killed the Warboss on turn two, the Wyvern on turn three, and I just
crunched the rest of his stuff. The bell didnt really do much. The scenario
being "Valley of Death" it was just a pitched battle with the screwed
deployment (and we had terrain in the valley part, for some reason) I just won
due to sheer casualaties. The only thing I did not like about the game was the
fact that the (kid) I played was too young, and was not mature enough for
playing WFB. That really soured my experience, and it made things hard.
GAME TWO:
Played a High Elf army. Three units of 10 archers
two RBT's, a unit of spearelves, two great eagles,a unit of Swordmasters, and
a unit of Silver Helms (actually, alot like Luke's list from what I remember).
He had a lvl 4 (Im guessing) wizard, using the high lore (or whatever it is
called) a character with the horses, and I think that is it.
This table war far, far better. There were a
few hills, but they were sloped. Far better than the last.
This game was a far better game than my first.
Good opponent to play (he ended up willing best painted) we didnt have to look
at the books once, we didnt have to call the judge, nothing. Smooth as you
please.
This was pretty much a total landside in my favor.
Things could have been different when he charged my Jezzails (2 groups of 5
close, next to my WLC) if he would have pursued off of the table. He didnt,
and next turn I shot it to death. His RBT's were really handing it to me, each
killed about 5 each shot. Luckily, my tunnelers came up on turn three and I
quickyl dispatched them. A few well placed charges on my part, some good
rolling fo shooting, and some failed tests for him won the day for Skaven. We
called it a game at turn five when all he had left was his swordmasters. Oh,
yea, the scenario was Magic Flux.
INBETWEEN GAME ONE AND TWO:
We had pizza. Real cool guys, I told them
previously in the e-mail that I do not eat beef or pork, and they asked me
what I wanted and they got it for me. I did pay 20 dollars to play, but it was
still nice.
The pub quiz was brought out (they snatched a
copy somewhere) It really wasnt as mind numbingly hard as it was made out to
be.
GAME THREE:
Vampire counts. Stigoli leading (for some reason I
think I remember it saying that Strigoli cannot lead units. Is that true?)
with three necro's, a big unit of gravegard, 2 big units of dire bats, a big
unit of bat swarms, and 2 units of dire wolves.
Before this game I had my eye set on "best
overall" but when I saw the scenario (arch-rivals...Deja vu) I qucikly
realized my only chances were a lucky shot with my WLC or a 13 with my bell.
And as everyone here knows, relying on something like that is a very quick way
to lose.
Basically, with his magic, he slowly whiddled my
chances down (jezzails, WLC, engineer) Things were looking grim. About on the
third turn I had an excellent chance to turn the game. I had a charge with my
Stormvermin, and both unit of clanrats on his unit of graveguard that was
housing his lord. It was looking good for me...but the man seemed to be able
to not fail a single save with his 3+ armor save. After three turns of combat,
I needed snakeeyes to stay....and stay I didnt. All three units fled, with the
unit carrying the grey seer being run down.
Needless to say, I lost, and my chanced for the
best overall were dashed. A bret player ended up winning...I was hoping to
face him.
And there you go. My battlereport.
