The Eurovision Song Contest
began it's life in 1956, with an idea taken from the San Remo
Song Festival by Frenchman Marcel Baison. Only 7 nations took
part, and they were allowed to enter 2 songs each. 2 performers
were sent from each nation, apart from Luxembourg and Switzerland
who used the same artist for both songs.
Many of the popular Eurovision themes were born in the first
year, with songs about topics such as local geography, good
fortune, everlasting happiness, and the first song to refer to
circuses, puppets, and clowns.
The results of the voting were never disclosed for 1956, but we do know that there were 2 judges from each competing nation, who voted for their favourite song. However, Luxembourg didn't send any judges, and asked the Swiss judges to vote on their behalf. Was this perhaps the reason for Switzerland winning the very first contest !
