For the first, and only time in Eurovision, the contest ended with a tie for first place, with 4 countries receiving 18 points. Although the blame for the controversy was given to the scoring system, it was more likely that the result came from there being no outstanding songs this year. The United Kingdom entry "Boom Bang A Bang" is often used to describe everything bad about the Eurovision Song Contest, but the song was chosen to represent the country ahead of songs written by Elton John & Bernie Taupin.
