The most succesful act ever to come from Eurovision appeared in 1974 in the form of Abba, a Swedish foursome. They had tried to qualify in the previous two years with "Better To Have Loved" in 1972, and "Ring Ring" in 1973, but 1974 was to be their year. The song "Waterloo" was the first real rock/pop song to be heard at Eurovision, and reaped the rewards it deserved. They did have some stiff competition though, as 1974 saw more acts reach the UK charts than any other year. Abba reached number 1 for 2 weeks, Gigliola Cinquetti reached number 8, Mouth and Macneal also reached number 8, and Olivia Newton John attained number 11.
