The Irish winners this year were the first male duet to claim victory in the history of the contest, and they did so in style, collecting the highest number of points to date. The second place song from Poland, is the best placing achieved from a debut country, and looks unlikely to be beaten. Maybe the most remebered part of this years contest was the interval act, Riverdance, which catapulted the performance into the limelight, and set it on the road to West End stardom. Under the new relegation system put in place due to the amount of countries wishing to enter, a few of the well known nations were not present at this event. There were however 6 new nations competing, and 2 of these finished in the top 5.
