It seems that the contest in recent years has to have some contoversy surrounding it. 1998 turned out to be the year that the first transexual performer won the title. Dana International had won the national heats in Israel a few years before, but had been banned from entering the contest by the Israeli government. This time she was back with an up-tempo track, which probably benefitted from the voting being provided by the general public. Representing Germany was an unusual act, the lead singer of which decided to climb the set whilst performing his song.
