April 1, 2006: The First Deployment of Project PHOTEX

During spring 2006, I am participating in Project PHOTEX (Photogrammetric Observation of Thunderstorms Experiment). Our first deployment occurred 1 April, when we went to the Texas Panhandle. Although storms were not especially cooperative, there was neat scenery along the way.

Vast burned area in the central Texas Panhandle (from the 12 March fires).

An unburned area for comparison.

A road through canyon country in the central Texas Panhandle.

Canyon along a river in the central Texas Panhandle.

Interesting skyscape prior to convective initiation.
