November 2006: Great Plains State Park/Wichita Mountains Trip
In late November, we went to Great Plains State Park in southwest Oklahoma, and drove through the Wichita Mountains on the way back. Great Plains State Park felt even more southwestern than the Wichita Mountains, and there were many amazing things to see.
Typical prairie grass/rocky landscape scene from Great Plains State Park. Rocky mountainside. Autumn prairie--note the colorful grasses and large cacti, which were abundant. Looking east from Great Plains--those are the Wichita Mountains! The common barrel cactus of the shortgrass prairie habitat at Great Plains. Canyon near Burford Lake in the Wichita Mountains, just before sunset. This road through prairie grass and between rocky mountain outcroppings somehow epitomizes the process of coming to an understanding of the High Plains... Abandoned house with Wichita Mountains in the background--this says much about life on the High Plains.
