Guatemala - President Jacobo Arbenz legislates
nationalization of plantations of US-owned United Fruit company. "Whats good for business is good for the USA" - Henry Ford. "Operation Success" launched by CIA to remove Arbenz. Stories planted in the media that communists would take over & Arbenz would become a dictator. CIA controlled radio statioin "La Voz de Liberacion" broadcasting from Honduras gave the impression of 1,000's of anti-communist soldiers waiting on the border. 2 years later in June 1954 - B26 bombers raid Guatemala city. Arbenz asks UN to intervene but US ambassador Henry Cabot Lodge blocked it. CIA sponsored Ex Colonel Armas & his "Liberation army" form a "government in exile" which takes power. Guatemala has become one of the most repressed states in Latin America since then. |

Cuba - Ex army general Fulgencia Batista
in power propped up by CIA. US run Cuban sugar plantations, resorts, casinos.
Fidel Castro and his bearded Guerilla army from the forests of the
Sierra Maestra take over and become not communist but socialist. Banks, sugar
industry, casinos etc. nationalized or frozen. US decides Castro has to go.
CIA sees poor, workers etc. as cannon fodder / pawns in their game.
CIA confident that Castro regime would collapse with one major battle. Richard
Bissell, Director of Covert opes charged with removing Castro. CIA first
planned to embarass him using chemicals to make his beard fall out, or spike
his cigars with LSD like drug. Even requested mafia to "whack the beard",
but they refused. JFK ordered CIA attempts on Castros life to cease, but
failed. Planned exploding cigar, exploding seashells etc, to get him when
diving. "Operation Mongoose" initiated to get Castro. Cuba "softened
up" by burning cane fields, department stores etc. U2 spy planes overfly
Cuba choosing targets. Bay of Pigs Fiasco : 1,500 men to land at the beach of Paya Giron on Cubas south coast. Full US naval & air support would be provided. Nov 1960, JFK elected & pulled out "any direct US troop involvement or large scale American air support". Bissell ignores him & on April 5, 1961 CIA piloted bombers in a night attack virtually destroy the tiny Cuban air force. 2 days later the invasion force lands on the beach after midnight, but were faced by Castros tanks. Forded to dig in on the beach. Dulles asked Kennedy for support. Kennedy refused. The CIAs Cubans had to find a way out themselves. Many taken prisoner. |
| Che Guevara was in Guatemala city
when the CIA was overthrowing leftist Arbenz Government. Caused him to be
a revolutionary and hate the US power structure & its profit driven
goals. So he joined Castro in the Cuban revolution & ousted the Batistas.
He then went to the Congo to fight against Tshombe and the white mercenaries under Englishman "Mad" Mikey Hoare. They lost in that war & he went back to Cuba. Didn't like Russian involvement their so he went to Bolivia where copper miners were revolting against the military regime under General Rene Barrientos. Felix Rodriguez, CIA agent, is credited with capturing Guevara along with the Bolivian Rangers. He was held prisoner for 1 night & then shot by the Bolivians. |

"The Blade" newspaper, Ohio this week won the Pulitzer Prize for a story on the Vietnam war where the US "Tiger force" killed 100s of unarmed men, women and children in 1967 in Quang Ngai province. Some US soldiers cut off the ears & wore them on necklaces to terrorize villagers. 4.5 yr army investigation concluded 18 soldiers committed war crimes, but none of them were charged.
