As I heard the bell ring and the pilot say, “Please put on your seat belts,” my eyes slowly opened as I woke from a sleep. I rolled my head over to peer out the window and there it was. The very place that I had waited 11 hours on that plane to see: Turkey. Below, the city of Istanbul looked like a magical wonderland, and I couldn’t wait to explore it. I knew that I was in for the most amazing adventure of my life.
From
the very beginning it was evident that the people of Turkey would be the
most interesting aspect of my trip. After a few days of being there, I
was able to put aside any of the stereotypes that I had originally had
of the country and its people, and I came to learn that the Turkish
people are among the most extraordinary people in the world. Here they
are, tucked away between the lands of Bulgaria and Iran, on a peninsula,
which is home to some of the most remarkable sites imaginable. However
the land may amaze you, the people will astound you, with their
generosity and hospitality. Therefore, this country that you must see in
order to say that you have truly enjoyed life. Life
is simple here, but with a peculiar restlessness at the same time. The
Turkish people love to savor the pleasures of life. They live every
moment to delight those around them, and do so with pride and
persistence. One
might well be intimidated by the language, but Turkish people use so
many facial expressions and hand gestures, using their eyes, or simply
making a “tut” noise, that if you pay attention to these things, you
often can figure out what they are saying regardless of the language.
Even though I speak little Turkish, I found that watching them was
enough to get the gist of their meaning. They are energetic, dramatic,
entertaining, and, above all full of life. I found myself quickly
adapting to their way of life. These are people with enormous historical
backgrounds. They take satisfaction in what they have evolved into,
along with a great pride in their county. I cannot forget feeling the
warm sand under my feet at Ölüdeniz Lagoon, watching the reflection of
the rising moon on the clear waters of the Mediterranean on summer
nights, joining in the lively rhythm of the night life, the friendliness
of everyone I met, and the exuberance of people watching football
matches on television. I would love to tell you all about every place that I visited there, but to be honest I would have to write a book. Take my word for it, this is the place to come on your next vacation. The best thing to do is getting connected to someone who knows the area, or talk to a travel agency for information. Do your own research, find out what you can see, it’s well worth it.
I
must not forget to tell you about the food of Turkey. One of the best in
the world. Turkish cuisine contains a lot of meat, seafood, vegetables,
rice, breads, and my personal favorite, desserts. Turkey is also known
for its wheat tea, hazelnuts, pistachios, and fruits. They have a huge
variety of their own Turkish dishes, plus many influenced by the rest of
Europe. I must insist that you try Döner Kebab - meat roasted on a
spit, which is truly wonderful. You will definitely not go hungry, if
anything, you will put on weight! As
I said before, there are innumerable places to see all over the country,
from remote castles to Biblical sites, and ancient amphitheatres to
Ottoman monuments. I want to give you a few tips to keep in mind when traveling to Turkey. These are some things that I did do, and some that I should have done. If possible travel with someone who is Turkish and knows the country. The land is scattered with places to see and you could pass directly by something fascinating and never know that it was there. Always try to ask someone for help if you need it. The Turkish people are more then willing to help anyone out. Make sure you get detailed information about transport because this will enable you to get around the country both easily and cheaply.
Before
you leave for Turkey, research it! It has such an interesting history
and you may want to visit some of those historical sites. Much of the
history of the world lies here, just waiting to be seen. Absorb
everything round you, the history, the land, and the people. Most
importantly, never assume that you have just seen the most amazing site
in your entire life, because the chances are, by the end of the trip,
you will have said that a score of times over. I feel that my experience in Turkey changed my life. I found friendships that will last a life time and beyond. I met absolutely remarkable people, and I am grateful that I had the chance to do so. It is a misunderstood land and culture that I was able to journey across, and I never felt frightened or unsafe. Never would I believe that the trip there would have such impact on my life. I saw things that I never knew existed, and if I had gone without seeing this great land, I would have missed out on the best part of life. No matter what I say, or how much I try to express the beauty and wonder of Turkey, my words will never do it justice, but I will do myself a favor and return again soon.
