How do you feel about studying the Word of God? Do you hunger and thirst for more
knowledge or do you find it difficult to study? When I first yielded to the Holy Spirit to lead
me into understanding the Word of God it was like a new beginning. I could not get enough
of reading this fantastic record of God working in the lives of His people. The promises to
God's children are enough to make you want to search the scriptures daily. One of my
favorite Bible verses is "Knowledge puffs up, but love builds up. The man who thinks he
knows something does not yet know as he ought to know. But the man who loves God is
known by God. " 1 Cor. 8:1 - 3 This is probably one
of my favorites because I know so
little.
The more we study the Bible the more enlightened we become; and the more certain we are
that we still need to learn so much.
When we study the Word more, we will
hunger for it as it is written " How sweet are thy
words unto my taste: yea sweeter than honey and the honeycomb to my mouth." Psalm
119:103
As we are enlightened by the Word of God we want more. Proverbs 119:130
"The entrance of thy words giveth light; it giveth understanding unto the simple." I remember still
the first time my head knowledge became heart knowledge. It was like a light suddenly turned
on and though I thought I knew before; then I was certain I knew that particular Word as never
before. It is only 18 inches from the head to the heart but only when the word is quickened to
us by the Holy Spirit does it become heart knowledge so that we can walk in it (or act upon
it). We can do nothing of ourselves
as Jesus said. "For without me you
can do nothing." John 15:5;
"If ye abide in me, and my words
abide in you, ye shall ask what ye will,
and it shall be done unto you. Herein is
my Father glorified, that ye bear much
fruit: so shall ye be my
disciples." John 15:7 - 8 We were given the Holy Spirit to lead us into all truth and He will if we yield to Him and
study the word as often as possible. God desires this fellowship time with us. We were
created for His pleasure and He wants to talk with us and share great and marvelous things
with us.
Proverbs 4:18
The path of the righteous is like the first gleam of dawn, shining ever brighter till the full light of day.
2 Peter 1: 19 And we have the word of the prophets made more certain, and you will do well
to pay attention to it, as to a light shining in a dark place, until the day dawns and the morning
star rises in your hearts.
Matthew Henry commentary.
"When the light of the scripture is darted into the blind mind and dark understanding by the
Holy Spirit of God, then the spiritual day dawns and the day-star arises in that soul. This
enlightening of a dark benighted mind is like the day-break that improves and advances,
spreads and diffuses itself through the whole soul, till it makes perfect day, Prov. 4:18. It is a
growing knowledge; those who are this way enlightened never think they know enough, till
they come to know as they are known. To give heed to this light must needs be the interest
and duty of all; and all who do truth come to this light, while evil-doers keep at a distance
from it."
My prayer for us is "That the God of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of glory, may give
unto us the spirit of wisdom and revelation in the knowledge of him: Ephesians 1:17

Oh, How Much I Love Your Law!
(Psalm 119: 97-112)
© copyright: Elizabeth & John Tolson 2000.
Oh, how much I love Your law
I would read it all day long.
Your commands will make me wiser
Than all those who do me wrong.
With more insight than my teachers,
If I will obey Your law;
I will have more understanding,
If I just obey Your law.
I have shunn'd the evil path
So I might obey Your word.
Laws which You Yourself have taught me
And I would obey You, Lord.
Sweeter than the taste of honey
Are the words within Your Law.
I will gain more understanding
If I will obey Your law.
Like a lamp Your word has been
Showing me the way ahead;
By its light I see the pathway
And no evil will I dread.
I have set my heart on keeping,
To the very end, Your law.
Lord, accept this praise I offer;
Teach me to obey Your law.
