The Supreme Revue by Binki

In 1992 I came back to the scene from a little break of 3 years and

decided to make drag something that I could call my own. I chose the

Supremes because my mother had just purchased a book on them and I started

reading it and fell in love. And also, what better group to impersonate! I

mean- they looked like drag queens! So at that time I was hanging out with

Clint Domsky (who became Flo) and Dace Delaurieas (who became Mary). I, of

course, was to play Diana Ross. So, besides our obvious color difference, we

started to do shows at the Roost. We were pretty rough looking at first, we

made due with what we had and did our best. But as a couple months went by,

we got better and better. Soon we were know around the gay bars and were

doing benifit shows and special events. Step one acheived. Now I thought,

how can I get this out there so everyone will know not only us, but we could

do alot for the community in ways of awareness. So it was really easy, I

called The Sidetrack cafe and they agreed to have us(no pay at that time)

and we were all thrilled! Not to mention scared out of our wits! Then we did

something that we never thought we'd do. Not because we didn't think we

could do it, but rather because everyone was telling us not to, we called

the Day by Day show. And they agreed as well. We appeared on the show in

late 1992 and did our show at the sidetrack to an over-enthusiastic crowd of

straight people! They were dancing and singing and clapping along. We

thoguht it was the greatest thing we ever saw! People were really going

crazy for us!

Then, it happened. Door's opened up for us and everyone had to see us! We

were asked to do shows at the Princess theatre, the Roxy, Yuk-yuk's and not

to mentino the Side track four more times! Television appearances, magazine

articles- features in the paper. We were in heaven! So thats when we knew

we were good. And that we had done something for the community.

It was just after our second T.V. appearance that Ron Byers asked me and

the girls to do a show with his group, The Village People. Well, we already

knew that they were the premier group in the gay community and that the're

comtributions to awareness and charities were astounding. hey worked very

had to get where they are and we were completley honored.

Ron said that we would do a string of shows in the city and then go on tour!

US? ON TOUR?! It was like a dream! We had alot of fun rehearsing for the

shows. It was very intense and yet we had the best time! We all got along

really well and worked very had to make a great show. We even had group

numbers with them! The shows went over extremely well!! It was great!

Some of my fondest memories are of that tour. i remember sitting in the

back seat of ron's car just gossiping up a storm with bobby and bill. I

remember stopping for gas in lloydmindster and we all thought we were gonna

get killed because Dace (one of the supremes) was soo flamboyant!! I will

never forget getting to that little club in saskatoon. We were all so

nervous! Its one thing to do a show for people you kinda know in your oun

city, but here we were not knowing anyone! We all did fantastic on that

tour. Regina was really great! It was so incredibly hot that summer. We were

afraid that our faces were gonna melt off. The guys were all like our older

brother's. They looked out for us and made sure that we stayed out of

trouble. Who to talk to and who to aviod. I guess thats why I like them so

much. They really were like our protecters.

When we got home from the tour I played the 'Village People's' "go west"

every night before i went to sleep. It really was an eye opener. It

certainly gave me alot more insight into what it was like to travel out of

town. I still use some of the things I learned from that trip today when I

travel.

The Supremes and the Village People went back to our seperate and regular

grind. Doing shows, T.V. and interviews. And like the real Supremes we had

to replace one of the girls. Clint was not happy at all with the way things

were going. I admit all I saw was a very angry and upset young man who

didn't seem to want to do any more shows. So we ended up asking him to leave

for awhile. He was replaced with a friend of ours. Then clint came back- and

left again and came back again. He was making it really hard for all of us

to continue as we once had. Dace soon stopped talking to me as well. We all

fought all the time and something had to give.

The Farewell show for the Queens to Supremes was held at the Sidetrack

Cafe in mid july 1997. In the dressing room we weren't even talking to each

other. We went on and I can say that there was never a night that we were

more like the real Supremes in our entire little carrer.

We all went our separate ways for a long time. We are all friends now and

we do try to connect when we can. But the Good ol' days are far behind us

now. Our lives have gone in three very different directions.

Nowdays, I am working in the group Divalicious with pepper and cherrie

(micheal and jason) we have a huge roster of numbers that we do and in that

roster we have the Supremes. So now we feature that in some of our shows. It

means alot to me to still be able to have friends that understand how

important that time was for me. Everytime we go up there to do a supremes

tune I think of the times we had. The places we've been and the village

people.

You see, I don't like to say good-bye. "Someday we'll be together?" but

never good-bye.
