This is Vanness's personal interview

("H" stands for host and "VW" stands for Vanness Wu)
You may imagine Vanness speaking so fast, being very animated and smiling constantly.

H: Vanness did you expect that you would be chosen to be host of MTV and that you are that popular to be chosen?

VW: No, Not expecting it! It 's great to see how many different kinds of people really watch MTV and love music! So, I didn't expect it, I'll just do my best; I wanted to do something new for the world of music and it came through world tours, live appearances , awards , interviews...

H: Can someone as popular as you cope with the weight of so many obligations?

VW: Yeah, I think so , because it didn't come as a total shock to me; I have always liked to travel, and people who liked the music and bought the album, always want to hear the person who plays to talk about it. Ok, I may be exposing myself to people almost everyday, but it's always a pleasure.

H: What is the meaning of success for you, besides being loved by the fans?

VW: I think that success is something that is, a personal definition. I think that for anything I do , it's a success if I've done it as best as I could do in that situation, if I'm happy with my performance , whether its a concert or anything. Success is, giving everything through your work, through what you love.

H: How does your family cope with your success?

VW: They're really excited ,my mum is great, and they're really excited by what I've been doing and they've always played a big part in my success

H: Tell us, how do you imagine yourself 20 years later?

VW: I think I have already answered that on our conversation! Ok, Twenty years! I hope I'd still be enjoying music. I think music will always be a big part of my life; as long as I enjoy it, as long as the people keep giving their appreciation to my music... But I think I'll be working at different things, that don't interest me at the moment, but music is always going to be my thing , in 20 years or in 30 years.

Star Appeal

Getting an assignment to meet Taiwanese heart-throb Vanness Wu in the flesh is a little like a death sentence, especially if you have the gall to let your gal pals in on the news. But what’s the big deal about some guy with a girlish name like Vanness? I have a feeling I’m about to find out real soon.

We arrive at the Conrad Centennial Singapore on a cloudy Wednesday afternoon for the Star Runner press conference with the F4 member and Korean belle Kim Hyun Joo.  If our past coverage of the follicled four is any gauge at all, we half expected to see groups of resourceful F4 fans armed with placards and teddy bears. But there are none. In fact, the atmosphere is eerily quiet as nonchalant hotel guests come and go, completely oblivious to the Asian demi-God hovering somewhere in their midst.
In the ballroom where the press conference will he held, the neat rows of chairs are barely filled. And if any of the female press are looking forward to seeing Vanness, they’re hiding it very well. It makes you wonder, has the hype of that once surrounded the fab four finally died off?

Then it happens, Vanness appears and all of a sudden, manic excitement sweeps across the room. The sluggish media hop to their feet, craning their necks for a glimpse of the wonder boy while camera-wielding photographers rush towards the makeshift stage. Now, this is more like it.

Vanness looks a tad irritated as he crashes his lanky body down on the couch. Not that I’m ogling at him, but his with his legs splayed and DKNY jacket half zipped to reveal a tiny bit of taut male cleavage, it’s not hard to see why women would be attracted to him. I mean, this guy is nothing if not pretty. His rosebud lips are pursed in a seductive pout, slitty eyes peeping from behind his wispy fringe. Yup, he’s a looker all right even without his signature locks but it’s not exactly the kind of rep he wants to carry around with him. “It’s a flattering thing,” he retorts when LIME comments on his good looks. “But it’s not what I base a lot on.” Right.

Vanness is in town to promote his debut movie Star Runner. Don’t be folled by the title though, Star Runner has nothing to do with running. The sport of choice in this case is boxing. Vanness plays Bond, a rebellious student and amateur boxer more interested on catching catnaps during class than in attending them. Quick to let his fists do the talking, he harbours big dreams of beating the defending boxing champion, Tank. Then a new Korean language teacher shows up in class one day and turns Bond’s life around. Sparks fly between them and soon tongues start wagging as the student-teacher romance begins to blossom. This scenario isn’t too much of a stretch for Vanness. “I was infatuated with a teacher before,” he confesses. “But of course, I didn’t know any better as I was only in primary school. It was a good thing really, because I would happily go off to school hoping to see more of her.”

Set as the prequel to director Daniel Lee’s hit movie A Fighter’s Blues, Star Runner will include gongfu legends Gordon Liu and Ti Lung. If that’s not intimidating enough, there’s the inevitable comparison with Andy Lau. But the self-assured Vanness brushes aside all that talk. “I’ve given my all in portraying Bond, any comparisons between myself and Andy Lau will not affect me.”

He signed up for what he felt was “an opportunity of a lifetime” largely based on the “very well-written” script. While Vanness has his acting career in sight, the director is banking on the teen idol’s huge fan base to push the movie along. In fact, he was so certain of Vanness’ appeal, he scripted a sequel even before filming wrapped. Says a bemused Vanness, “Before we even finished one of the first fighting scenes, the director came up to me and said, “Vanness, I have something to tell you but you have to promise to say yes.” So I did. He told m he had already thought of a script for part two!”

Acting in her first Hongkong production is Vanness’ pretty companion Kim Hyun Joo. Needless to say, all the guys present are present are pleased as punch to have other eye candy to gawk at besides Vanness. This is Kim’s first foray into the genre although the starlet has appeared in numerous Korean period dramas.

Although Kim thinks Vanness is “really dashing, cute and intelligent”, there were no sparks on set. However, Vanness scored brownie points when he braved the Hong Kong summer and slogged it out without so much as a single complaint. “I was very impressed with the dedication of the crew, especially Vanness.” It was summer in Hong Kong when we were filming and everyone got a bit edgy and grumpy since it was so hot. But Vanness neva threw a tantrum. No matter how tiring some days were, he never got impatient or angry.”

Apart from adding a feature film to his already extension cache of achievements, Vanness has just finished recording demos for his sophomore solo album following Body Will Body. Fans can expect the record, which he claims to be “a 180 degree turn from the first one” sometime this year. Apart from getting his CD in ship-shape, he’ll also busy filming the sequel to Star Runner.

Vanness isn’t the only one with a full schedule. F4 bandmates Ken Zhu, Vic Chou and Jerry Yen have also been filling coffers with retirement dough. Ken’s been busy promoting his movie Sky Of Love as well as new TV serial Love Storm which, incidentally, stars Vanness’ alleged lady love Vivian Hsu. Meanwhile, Jerry’s first big-screen outing Magic Kitchen with Sammi Cheng will de premiering in cinemas this month while filming has just wrapped for Vic’s debut flick Judo Chart and TV drama Love Storm.

With each of the boys clamouring for movie deals, is there any bad blooding brewing among them? Not if Vanness has anything to say about it. “Oh no, there’s no rivalry,” says Vanness. “There’s only mutual respect and support. It’s pointless to have any rivalry with the very people you started this whole thing with. “As girls Asia-wide wait with bated breath, Vanness assures us, “F4 will work together again. I’m not sure when but hopefully soon. There’ve been arrangements for that.” Now all this reporter has to do is wait for that next F4 assignment.

By lopping off luscious locks. Vanness Wu hopes to disassociate himself with his pretty boy image. LIME meets the crimson-lipped one when he was in town to promote debut movie Star Runner and wonders if all the hype has finally died down.

Translation

Foreword:
Chances are given to people who are ready. A 9-5 job, the street is already bustling with activities, in the hotel, Vanness' can be heard happily chatting away. The Vanness' in front of me, obviously has become more muscular, his charismatic smile, complex emotions written in his eyes, are those that is expressed naturally and compliments each other. After F4 has 'disbanded', Vanness' is considerably swift at cutting a name for himself in the movie scene, he said wearisomely, since the chance has come, then it should be seized and made the most out of it. Oh, I really agree with him. Chances are really for people who are ready for it!

Mama's Boy Vanness Wu

This is Vanness first time, first movie, the audiences are expecting him to perform well. Let me tell you, he really relish and played the role very well, he even went through the pain of learning kung-fu so that the character is more convincing.

Asking him the pressures of acting in a movie, he said he would not give himself any pressure because he realized that once he gives himself pressure, he seem to be not able to do anything well, relaxing himself a bit will let him complete his task more comfortably. In this movie Star Runner, Vanness does not think that it is the beginning for him after F4 has disbanded? this is just a job as long as he does it well it is fine.

His answer was formal-I am not satisfied; after thinking, he answered honestly. Hong Kong is a place where I start my career, ever since I knew I was going to star in Star Runner I have already decided. But it does not matter if it is in Hong Kong or other country, I will definitely do my best because I hope to be able to have a movie in USA. This is because my family is there and I hope to spend more time with them. After that, have you ever thought of joining Hollywood? Honestly speaking, many Asians have been recognized in USA, but their roles are always villians, I hope that I can play a more down to earth character.
In the movie, Vanness is portraying a boxer; does that mean you plan to commit yourself to that type of genre of shows? He quickly answered no; he never really thought of picking a certain genre for him to venture in, if there is any good offer or chance he probably will accept it. Talking about his performance in the movie, he did not rate himself because he thinks that no matter how good he is, there is always room for improvement, For instance, if I give myself 7 points, there is still 3 more points left to improve on, this depends on the opinion of others. There is a rumour that F4 might be in a movie together is it true? Yes, my company has mentioned it, but everything is still in negotiating terms, there are still a lot of discussions to go, I'm not too sure.
On screen, Vanness loves to joke around, but in reality he can be easily touched. I was noticing him, soon I realized that during our conversation he always smiles, not like during the press conference where he keeps a cool fade, even Kim who was being interviewed a few meters away was surprised and kept stealing glances at our way, trying to figure out what are we up to? Vanness is a guy hard on the outside, soft on the inside.

Having seen pictures of Vanness when he was young, he used to be a fat boy, now he has transformed into an artiste. I used to daydream a lot when I was young, dreaming that I was a character in comics, those type who has huge muscles! He laughed, not hiding his glee, When I was young I was very active, always running here and there, very energetic. Whenever I see someone perform on stage, I used to have the urge to perform too, I think that was when I dreamt to be an artiste one day.?Do you think you are handsome? Vanness could not surpress his laughter, me? I dont think I am very handsome or cute! I just look like this, I am quite plain. P/S I think he is cute, handsome, cool, charismatic etc. even if he thinks he is not!)

Then, are you the type of guy who can be easily touched? Yes, quite easily. When watching a silly show and there is a touching scene, tears starts to well-up in my eyes, but I think this is a good thing! I remember when watching The Patriot starring Mel Gibson, the story setting was before there was war, a girl who always never uttered a word amazingly said Daddy, don't go!? The father was so happy then. I thought that it was a war movie, I never thought that it was going to be so touching, I almost started crying, I kept on trying not to because I think I am a guy and I should not cry! When I sneaked a glance at my friends, they were crying like nobody business, aw man I should have just cried. This time it was my turn to burst out laughing because of Vanness? gesture and body language, trying to pretend to cry and even having a runny nose! Asking him more in depth, do u think it is shameful for a guy to cry? Vanness smiled, it depends on the circumstances! Sometimes yes, sometimes I dont think so.
No matter what the topic is changed to, Vanness always manages to mention his mother. Every time he mentioned her, he always grins, just like a small kid. Just like his carefree personality, he manages to express and mention his love for his mother.

With mother's care, Vanness childhood is a happy one. When I was living with them, I used to think they were a bother, but after moving out, I do not get to see them, I actually found myself missing them, I think this has made us closer. Every time I go home, I would want to bring my siblings out to play, although they are still young, but I still want to bring them out to play. Do you spoil your mother rotten? it really spoil my mother, love her a lot, even if she can make me go crazy, make me very mad! {What do you mean?} the likes you to do this and that the last minute, then you have to do this and that! Sometimes she can be a real pain and irritating, but thinking back, if she is not like that then she would not be my mother, that's why I really do spoil her. Because you love your mother a lot, does this make you very depend on her? yes, I have always been very dependent on her, but I still think she is nags a lot and finds her irritating!?

After joining the industry, Vanness has learnt to be stronger, you have become stronger mentally and have the courage to face your problems, every time you encounter any problems, will you act like a small kid and go running to his mother crying? there are things I will not tell her, because I dont want her to worry, if I can solve it myself then I will keep the burden to myself, but I will still take some time out to chat with her, we talk about how life, I don't really like to talk business with her, when talking about my brother and sister, she still needs my help.'

Everyone also says that artistes earn a lot of money, when they earn enough they do whatever they want, Vanness is not to be left out but his goal is set because of his mother. ah, I need to be hard-working! One day, I can call my mother and tell her that she does not need to work anymore, I can take care of her. But now, she her shop is doing very well, she loves it a lot, this shop started from scratch, from nothing to something.
