Peter Gum

Peter was born in Washington, D.C. He spent his early years on farms in Montgomery County, MD which borders Washington to the north.  One of his fondest recollections as a youngster is riding his bicycle far and wide over the countryside.  After George School, he graduated from Oberlin College, where he met ane married Shelley Timmons.  He obtained an MA in Mathematics from American University.  He worked at the Naval Research Laboratory for a few years before joining IBM in Poughkeepsie, NY, in 1964. He was a main-frame computer designer (programmer and engineer) until he retired from IBM in 1993.

Pete and Shelley have two children.  Ted works for Johnson and Johnson in Princeton, NJ, while Linda works for IBM in Fishkill, NY.  Ted re-introduced his mom and dad to bicycling upon their retirement, which has subsequently become one focus of their retirement activities.  Pete says it's a lot like being a kid again.  Besides biking many places in the states, including 180 miles along the Katy trail in Missouri, they have toured in several European countries.  Birding, gardening, and planning and executing a variety of big and small trips to see the world, keeps them busy along with their keen interest in the internet.
