The data of this discussion is mostly contained in the biography of Nobel-prize-winning mathematician, John Forbes Nash, Jr., A Beautiful Mind. His 2nd son’s birth is more explicitly described and includes the birth time. So, in the 1st case, I am dealing with an “unknown birth time.”

From the year 1959 to 1966, JFN was subjected to psychiatric treatment and observation. His diagnosis was consistent,or so they believed, with psychiatric observations including hallucinations, voices, and paranoia. However, the psychiatric literature does not describe a “remission” phase in paranoid schizophrenia. The author, Sylvia Nasar, describes his remission as a “rarity.” However, was there any nervous breakdown, por is the period of JFN's "solitude",i.e., marginalization more the result of societal intolerances?

However, I would analyze his “illness” from a Vedic perspective. Now, what do I mean by “Vedic”? This discussion will refer to natal astrology. As I have mentioned elsewhere, mental disease can be “diagnosed” from the native’s chart, examining the disposition of the three lagnas (Moon, Sun and Ascendant).

Now, because the planetary positions are amenable to mathematical descriptions, astrological ignorance does not rule out the possibility of medical personnel utilizing birth data as an index of future conditions. In fact, my work on developing pediatric software is meant to cover that without confusion.

Okay, let’s return to the topic of the father, John Forbes Nash, Jr. What is the ascendant? As we know a few minutes difference in birth time will result in corresponding alterations in the Moon degree and hence, much larger changes the Vimsottari dasa progression. The Vimsotarri dasa progression simply put, describes the average life of 108 years as being divided into different cycles, each singular in its effects by way of its ruling planet.

Now let us see, if we take JFN’s birth time as 9:30PM: 1st, the ascendant will be the same as that of his 2nd son, JCMN, specifically, Sagittarius.

Remember, that John Forbes Nash, Jr. was awarded a Nobel Prize for his work in “game theory.” Most of us are aware that Sagittarians are very playful, “gamey,” like fast cars, traveling, are comedians. This also appears in the personality of his 2nd son, JCMN, who enjoyed roaming the country on the Greyhound.

So, given the birth time of 9:30 PM, there is a corresponding change in years of the “mega-cycle”. That is, if for example, we took a 6:30 AM birth time, the moon would be 28° Pisces, which does not correspond to his muscular physique. Therefore, a later birth time, corresponding with his 2nd son’s ascendant, results in an 8°Aries moon which, of course, is more descriptive of his muscularity and character.

A 2nd guideline is that the difference of 7°35', (6:30 AM vs. 9:30 PM) also results in major changes in the Vimsottari, as I mentioned before. So, instead of beginning life in a Mercury dasa, he begins it in a Ketu dasa, (4 years) and then begins an exalted 20 year Venus period during which he began his illustrious mathematical career at Princeton. The following 6-year Sun period is also particularly notable. It is not until he is in his 10 year Moon period, that the psychotic symptomatology began. It is specifically around the end of this 10 year period, that his family and doctors believe he began remission 1966-68.

What was so devastating about the Moon period? the Moon is in the 5th house, which is considered beneficial. However, in the 12th divisional chart, dwadasamsa, the Moon is conjunct malefic Saturn which is also casting its'10th aspect on the Sun. These aspects might be negative enough, along with other endocrine imbalances, to usher in the paranoid symptomatology that arose in 1959.However, without the contributing factor of an arrest by the Vice squad in 1954 and the early death of his father in 9/56, I would seriously doubt the ensuing scenario.

During those times, there was also much confusion about diagnosis, controversy about treatment (electro-shock, psycho-tropics, etc.) The following 25 years consisted of a short Mars period (6 years) and a 19 year Rahu period. The family would not allow any treatment that might alter his neurological, i.e., memory, functioning. It must also be stated that he is no longer on any psychiatric medications.

It was at the beginning of his Jupiter period that he was awarded the Nobel prize. Note that Jupiter is the lord of his ascendant,Sagittarius, and that the placement of the lagna lord is extremely important predictive indicator. Note that JCMN (2nd son) has lagna lord in the 12th or house of loss.

So, the question remains, was the diagnosis incorrect? Did his arrest on homosexuality charges in Santa Monica precipitate his fall from grace? Followed in a-year-and-a-half, by the early death of John Sr.? His descent into madness? Paranoia? Did the McCarthy era and Cold War mentality contribute to his seeking refuge status in Europe? Was he really mad? In Vedic Astrology, it is noted that the conjunction/opposition of Saturn does usually result in a chronic condition. Saturn is 22° Scorpio and directly opposite is the Sun @ 29°& @Venus 25° in Taurus. So, this classic Sun-Saturn opposition may be more descriptive of perhaps yet another less well-known condition. One that most likely would affect the hypothalamus. It is well known that endocrine dysfunctions very commonly result in psychological disorientation and and even mood swings. Just because we don't yet have the methods to measure these small endocring/neurological imbalances, does not mean they have no effect.

John Forbes Nash jr.'s 2nd son, John Charles Martin Nash was born (just after his father’s 1st hospitalization at McLean) on 5/20/59 "late" in the evening. I am choosing 10:50 PM because it is Sagittarius rising and the Moon is 15°in Libra, or the 3rd pada of Swati which describes the native as being obstinate, ruminating, an extravagant spender. This selection of Sagittarius rising also places Jupiter, dispositor of the father, in the 12th house to the ascendant.The 12th house is the house of loss. 1st Jupiter is extremely important planet because it is lagnesh, or lord of the Ascendant, 2nd Jupiter is the dispositor of the father. We do know that much of his childhood was spent in the absence of his father. He, too, has been frequently hospitalized and treated for mental illness. What is evident in his chart is the position of the northern node, Rahu, in the 12th house to the Moon. This placement is frequently associated with obsessive-compulsive disorder. Saturn is also in the ascendant, which, of course, delays marriage and frequently leads to foreign fame.

So, there seems to be more evidence in his case of disturbing environmental factors, rather than inherently neurological disease. There is no classic Saturn-Sun conjunction/opposition, merely Saturn throwing its 3rd aspect on the Sun conjunct with debilitated Mars in the 12 divisional chart (dwadasamsa). Of course, this divisional chart is extremely important in finding otherwise “hidden” diseases. Another observation is the weakness of fallen Mars, which does have noticeable and disastrous effects. JCMN’s early life was dominated by the Maha periods of Rahu and Jupiter and since the latter planet is in the 12th house, he spent that time in the absence of his father. The Jupiter 16 year period is 1965-81. 1981 is another important landmark year for JCMN since he started his Ph.D. in Math at Rutgers University despite not having either a H.S. nor a college diploma. That was the beginning of his Saturn period which could have been his strongest period due to its placement in the ascendant and in a house owned by Jupiter. It might have been even more successful, had his emotions not interfered so much and he was hospitalized quite frequently.

In JCMN’s chart there is evidence of OCD, but not the chronic “hidden” condition noted in his father’s chart. He apparently is very obstinate about taking his medications and has been noted to be more volatile in temperament. He is presently in a Mercury Maha-period. Mercury is not particularly strong in his chart.

The next most promising period is a Venus das, but it starts in 2024, when he will be 65 years old. His father was 66 years old when he won the Nobel prize. JCMN has made significant contributions in number theory.(B sequence in number theory)
