Voronezh State University — a classical university — is one of the largest centers of science, culture and training of highly qualified specialists in Russia. It was established in 1918 on the basis of one of Russian oldest universities, that of Derpt (or Yuriev).

The university is comprised of 5 branches, 4 high schools and colleges, 4 Research Institutes, 11 research laboratories of Russian Academy of Sciences, 17 faculties: Biology and Soil Science, Geography, Geology and Environmental Studies, Journalism, History, Computer sciences, Mathematics, Faculty of Applied Mathematics and Mechanics, Romance - Germanic Philology, Pharmacology, Physics, Russian Philology, Chemistry, Law, Economics and Bussiness, Philosophy and Psychology, Institute of international education.
105 departments are staffed with 1310 lecturers, including 217 Academicians, DsSc, Professors; 664 PhDs and assistant professors. Over 18 thousand students are currently trained at VSU.
Over the years of its history, Voronezh University has awarded degrees to about 85 thousand qualified specialists. Many of its graduates — Nobel Prize laureates, academicians, ministers, scientists, scholars and cultural workers — are famous all over the world.
Research activity is carried out in the framework of 29 basic scientific directions:
• Qualitative theory of ordinary differential equation;
• Nonlinear function analysis;
• Mechanics of deformable solid bodies;
• Theory of nucleus structure;
• Semiconductors. Ferroelectric and antiferroelectric;
• Interaction of atoms and molecules with external fields and radiation;
• Statistical radiophysics;
• Semiconductors of microelectronics;
• Semiconducting solid solutions;
• High-molecular connections;
• Interaction of biosystems with an environment;
• Origion and occurence of mineral deposits;
• Social and economic problems;
• Economics and management of enterprises
• Philosophy;
• Literary criticism and linguistics.

Every year university scientists publish about 40 monographs, 60 textbooks, 2000 scientific articles. The university issues periodical magazine «Vestnic VSU» in 6 issues: «Physics, Mathematics», «Biology, Chemistry», «Geology», «Geography and geoecology», «Humanitarian sciens», «Problems in higher education»; «Condensed mediums and phase boundary scope» and also «Publications of young scientists», 34 other subject periodicals. At university there are 15 scientific boards awarding degrees in 50 scientific specialities.
University possess modern equipment, the biggest library with more than 3 million volumes, 6 museums, Botanic garden, a unique wild-life preserve «Galichya Gora». The new information technologies are widely used in educational process. The University also houses the Mathematics Research Institute, an Innovation Centre for New Technologies, and an Internet Centre. Through international nets the University has an access to European and American libraries data bases.
The University provides its students with convenient and inexpensive hostels, student's polyclinic, medical insurance, dining-halls, cafe, sports complex, concert halls, different creative studios, summer sports camp, modern communication facilities.
Voronezh University was one of the first in the ex-USSR and Russia to start enrolling foreign students. In the past 40 years it has trained, under various kinds of programmes, over 13 thousand foreign students, post-graduates and trainees from 89 countries of Europe, Asia, Africa, Middle East, Latin America and the USA, including about 1000 — from Great Britain, more than 2000 — from Germany. Annually about 700 foreign students and post-graduates are trained at VSU.
The university realizes educative programs on one-level (5 years) and multilevel systems satisfying the international standards. Russian and foreign students are offered the following courses and levels of training:
complete course leading to BS and BA degree — 4 years;
complete course leading to a specialist degree — 5 years;
courses leading to MSc and MA degrees — 6 years (for students holding BSc and BA degrees — 2 years);
postgraduate courses conducted in the Russian and European languages (full-time — 3 years, correspondence course — 4 years);
post-doctoral study and research;
preparatory courses for foreign students — 1 year;
various schemes of on-the-job training from 1 month till 1 year;
improvement of occupational skills;
retraining courses;
Russian language courses, including Business Russian;
improvement of occupational skills for foreign teachers of the Russian language and literature;
additional educational services (special courses).

Attention! Training in Computer specializations is conducted in English.
The Preparatory Faculty has been functioning successfully for 33 years. It offers preparatory courses designed to bring students to the standard required for entry to normal degree courses in humanities, medicine, economics, engineering, natural sciences. With the help of up-to-date pedagogical technologies, the original teaching methods, continuously upgraded computer facilities, audio and video equipment foreign students can study the Russian language, systematize and improve their knowledge in chosen subjects.
Foreign students study and live in the specially constructed modern complex including the concert and sport halls, dining-room, cafe. The students live in rooms for 1-2 persons.
The university offers its students plenty of opportunities for creative development, entertainment, socialising and sport. You can also be trained to drive a motor vehicle and obtain an internationally valid driving license, study a European language (English, French, German, or Spanish).
Foreign national and international holidays and festivals, sports competitions, exhibitions, exciting guided tours to Moscow, St. Petersburg, and the ancient cities of the Russian Golden Ring and the Caucasus are also regular features.
Voronezh University actively develops its international contacts, participates in many international projects. There are long term agreements on cooperation with more than 30 universities of Great Britain, Germany, Spain, China, USA, France, Czech, Estonia, Ireland and other countries. The university widely participates in educational and scientific programs, such as UNESCO, TEMPUS/TACIS, IREX, INTAS, DAAD, Institute «Open society» (Soros Foundation), International Scientific Fund etc.
