Works 2000, Beginning

Description: This is the class to take if you have Works on your computer or just finished Introduction to Computers. Learn about computer concepts and complete hands-on projects using Microsoft Works for Windows. Works is an integrated program that combines a word processor, spreadsheet and a database all in one program. We will create letters, stationary, flyers, newsletters, an address book, a spreadsheet and use a database in a easy, paced class that let’s your become comfortable with the computer. Prerequisite:; Introduction to Computers or equivalent skills. Fee for book.
Objectives:
Start the computer & access the program.
Learn to use special keys on the computer keyboard.
Identify the parts of the application window.
Keyboard & edit text for documents.
Move and copy words, paragraphs and blocks of text.
Check and correct a document using the speller.
Change the default format layout, print preview & print files..
Save files to and retrieve them from storage locations.
Format characters, paragraphs and documents.
Create a flyer & an address book using a Works Wizard.Set.

WORD 2000, Beginning

Description: Learn to: access WORD; create a document; select and edit text; move and copy text; use the spell function; Tabs, Indents & margins; and format documents. Prerequisite: Typing skills; basic computer skills; use the mouse; understand the keyboard; Introduction to Computers-recommended. Fee for book.
Objectives:
Start the computer & access the program.
Learn to use special keys on the computer keyboard.
Identify the parts of the application window.
Keyboard & edit text for documents.
Move and copy words, paragraphs and blocks of text.
Check and correct a document using the speller, grammar check & thesaurus.
Change the default format layout, print preview & print files..
Save files to and retrieve them from storage locations.
Format characters, paragraphs and documents.
Create page breaks, insert page numbers, footnotes & endnotes in a document.
Add headers & footers in a document and modify same.
Set and remove custom tabs.

WORD 2000, Intermediate

Description: This course continues from Word, Beginning. We will learn the following skills: Tables; sorting; revisions; math functions; merging form documents; and adding graphics. Prerequisite: WORD, Beginning.
Objectives:
Create & edit a table
Format a table
Create side by side paragraphs, convert text to a table
Become familiar with sorting text and numbers
Perform mathematical calculations in a table
Use the find and replace feature to change text in a document.
Understand the basic functions of form letters, mail merge & creating labels
Create multiple column documents & understand how sections affect document formats
Introduction to graphics, create text boxes, watermarks
Create a newsletter

EXCEL 2000, Beginning

Description: An introduction to Excel features and functions. Items covered: basic spreadsheet, databases, formulas & functions, spreadsheet enhancing. Prerequisite: Typing skills; basic computer skills such as using the mouse, opening and saving files, understand the keyboard; Introduction to Computers.
Objectives:
Start the computer & access the program.
Learn to use special keys on the computer keyboard and understand Excel terms.
Create a basic spreadsheet.
Identify values, labels, ranges, formulas, and functions.
Change fonts, borders, column width and row height.
Create, save and update a workbook.
Work with multiple workbooks.
Change display options, insert and delete columns & rows.
Print worksheets & workbooks.

EXCEL 2000, Intermediate

Description: This course continues from Excel, Beginning. We will learn features for sophisticated worksheets; financial functions; customized charts, statistical database functions and 3-D referencing and linking. Prerequisite: Excel 97, Beginning.
Objectives:
Function wizard and linking functions.
Analysis tools.
Chart basics.
Embedded charts and editing charts.
Protection options.
Database basics:  sorting, filters, auto-sum
Searching & editing databases.
Integrate an Excel Spreadsheet into a Word document.
Graphic & drawing tools used in a worksheet.

Works 2000, Intermediate

Description: This course continues from Works, Beginning. Use WORKS to mail merge. Improve your data base, spreadsheet and File Management skills. Prerequisite: Using Microsoft Works.
Objectives:
Review data base concepts & create an address data base from start to finish.
Make labels, phone list and address lists from the data base.
Use the header & footer area of documents and spreadsheets.
Use the data base to create form letters.
Enhance spreadsheet skills to include adding & deleting columns, inserting formulas and borders.
Create a chart from a spreadsheet.
File management skills—creating folders, moving files, deleting files & renaming files.

File Management for Windows

Description: A six hour hands-on class to learn how to manage your computer files. Learn how to create folders, rename and/or delete files, move files, copy files, and create a desktop shortcut to an important file. We will learn when to use My Computer and when to use the Explorer. We will take away the mystery & fear of using the Explorer!
Objectives:
Review My Computer window & toolbars.
Review Explorer window & toolbars.
Identify default file locations in Microsoft Office Applications.
Create files, file folders, and change default locations in applications.
Move and copy files, delete files and rename files using both My Computer and the Explorer.
Develop your own system to manage your computer's data files
Learn how to back-up your data files
Time to go home & practice and get answers to your questions

Mailing Labels

Description: Using Word, we will create a data source with addresses. Then we will create mailing labels using mail merge and the data source. Class time will be provided to start your own address data list. Prerequisite: Basic word processing skills. Bring in your address book or your own data list to complete your own data source.
Objectives:
Review the table function for use as a data base.
Prepare a sample table of names & addresses.
Prepare the students own table of names & addresses.
Review the Mail Label merge function.
Merge and create a plain paper test sheet showing multiple labels.
Time & help to finish your labels.  (School does not provide label paper)

Newsletter & Flyers

Description: Using Word, we will create a sample newsletter. Then individually each person will start their own newsletter. Prerequisite: Basic word processing skills. Bring in your stories either handwritten or on a diskette to add into your newsletter.
Objectives:
Review font selection, font sizing, paragraph formatting & banners.
Prepare sample newsletter stories, format & insert graphics.
Prepare the students own stories and heading formats.
Review formatting a newsletter.
Combine story documents and format students’ newsletters.
Note--this is a workshop class--come in with your information to prepare your newsletter!

Microsoft Publisher

Description: Use Microsoft Publisher 98 and/or 2000 to create greeting cards, invitations, business cards, flyers, brochures, resumes, signs, banners and more! Basic computer skills required. Come learn how easy it is to produce professional looking materials.
Objectives:
Introduce the Publisher Program and the Publisher Window
Understand Page Layout commands and start-up options offered by Publisher.
Create a text frame and import text into the frame.
Create a picture frame and fill it with a picture
Create a WordArt frame for manipulating text into various shapes.
Assemble a business card and a short publication.
Modify frames using the formatting options and apply Publisher’s special functions to frames.
Create and modify table frames and data in the table.
Create and modify borders and graphic images
Understand the concept and elements of the background page.
Create your own creating cards and newsletters

Description: A six hour hands -on class in the essential operation of Windows Operating Systems, covering standard and desktop applications.

Introduction to the Internet

Description: A three hour hands-on workshop using the Internet Explorer to explore the Internet. Topics include Internet concepts, terminology & features.
Objectives:

 Understand brief history of the internet

  Define internet services—major categories: FTP, HTTP, Telnet, Gopher, E-mail, Newsgroups

  Define what you need to get on the internet

  Discuss different browsers used for viewing the internet-Netscape, Internet Explorer, and AOL.  Understand browser differences and similarities.

  Use the internet to look at sites

  How do you find an internet provider?

  Copy information from a site to a word processing program

  Review specific sites to understand different features of web site.

Explore the Internet

Description: A 9 hour hands-on workshop using Netscape and Internet Explorer. Topics include saving & printing web pages & images, using search engines effectively, viewing HTML, understanding & using e-mail features & internet concepts. The class provides instruction to become familiar with accessing information of the World Wide Web.

Brief Recap of Intro to the Internet
Look at the HTML of a web page
Understand parts of a URL
Hands on work at sites to see page elements and learn terminology

Saving a Web Page as a file
Review COPYING information from a web site to Notepad or a Word Processing program

Description: A 15-hour class. Upon completion, students gain a basic understanding of database management and develop skills. Items covered: working with tables, relationships, importing/exporting files, modifying/designing forms and reports, calculated fields in queries.

Description: A 15-hour class. Upon completion, students will be able to manipulate data using MS Access. Students will be able to customize forms and queries, developing these skills with numerous hands-on exercises and lecture. Prerequisite: Access 2000, Beginning.

Description: Learn the features of Power Point. Prepare a presentation and present it in 3 hours.
Objectives:
Understand screen elements, views, toolbars, menus.
Use the Auto Content Wizard and Create a presentation from 'scratch'.
Create and edit slides, organization charts, & graphs, add clipart and use the drawing tools.
Use slide transition and build effects.
Use slide animation.
Understand the various ways to print your presentation and give a presentation.
