| APPLE SNAILS |
| SCIENTIFIC NAMES: Genus: Pomacea; Species: P. bridgesi, P. glauca, P. flagellata ALIAS (i.e. COMMON NAMES): Gold Snails, Mystery Snails, Black/Gold Mystery Snails SIZE: Up to 3-4" across the shell, may be bigger. WATER: Not picky. Likes high oxygen levels, sensitive to dissolved metals (like copper- avoid many over the counter fish medications). Needs a steady supply of calcium for their constantly growing shell. FEEDING: Again, not too picky. They will eats plant and (dead) animal based foods. This makes them somewhat a danger to planted tanks. My snail enjoys goldfish pellets and flake food. They use their rasping mouth parts (the radula) to scrape alage from the tank sides. NOTES: I find that many people buy snails thinking that they will be self sufficient and eat only algae. Unless your tank has a lot of algae, your snail will need to be fed (see above). Also, keep in mind that the snails will produce waste, so take that into account before buying. |
