TITLE: The Aquarium Fish Survival Manual AUTHOR: Brian Ward PUBLISHER: Barrons DATE PUBLISHED: 1985; reprinted 1991, 1992 THE GOOD: Many excellent pictures. Excellent section on aquatic plants and aquascaping. Over 300 individual fresh and marine fish species listed. THE BAD: Because it is so old, the scientific names are severely outdated.

TITLE: Catfish: Keeping & Breeding Them In Captivity AUTHOR: Richard Geis PUBLISHER: T.F.H. TFH ID NUMBER: RE-604 THE GOOD: Good color photos. Descriptions of breeding habits of several families including armored catfish (corydoras, aspidoras, brochis) and several loricarids. THE BAD: The section on "selected species" is too short. Information is not really detailed enough to make this a worthwhile purchase if you seriously wish to breed. For hobbyist breeders such as myself, it is adequate.
TITLE: The Complete Aquarium AUTHOR: Peter W. Scott PUBLISHER: DK Publishing, Inc. DATE PUBLISHED: 1991, 1995 THE GOOD: Can't say enough about this book. It's incredible, to put it lightly. Provides basic information on maintenance, fish/ invert species, pictures of plants, in addition to many detailed descriptions of how to set up biotope tanks. Some of the coolest setups they describe- Amazon Rainforest Acid pool, Zaire River rapids, Papua New Guinea Sandy River and Mangrove Swamp (complete with fiddler crabs and mud skippers). THE BAD: I'm at a loss for this one.

TITLE: Dr. Axelrod's Atlas of Freshwater Aquarium Fishes- 9th Edition AUTHOR: Dr. Herbert R. Axelrod, Dr. Warren E. Burgess, Neal Pronek, Jerry G. Walls PUBLISHER: TFH DATE PUBLISHED: 1997 THE GOOD: This is the COOLEST book. It's so BIG, I can't even scan the cover! Over 1800 pages, mostly of pictures of freshwater aquarium fish, with picture coded care descriptions. Not only does this book depict species, but it also depicts varieties- over 30 pages of koi varieties, 26 of bettas (colors, tail shapes, etc). This is a truly amazing book, an excellent reference. THE BAD: I'm at a loss for this one too. Maybe the price, but for what you get....
