Ham Radio during Disaster
One of the resolutions taken by the World Administrative Radio
Conference, Geneva, in 1979 says that Amateur Radio activity throughout the world should
be promoted, because in the event of a natural disaster, normal communication systems are
frequently overloaded, damaged or completely disrupted at a time when rapid establishment
of communication becomes essential to facilitate worldwide relief actions. Under those
circumstances, a greater density and wide-spread distribution of ham radio
stations can efficiently assist in meeting the communication needs. Also in the event of a
natural disaster, direct communication between amateur radio operators and other wireless
stations belonging to the police, armed forces and para-military forces might enable vital
communications to be carried out until normal communication are restored.

Ham radio for the doctors
Doctors can organise emergency medical nets to provide
on-the-air help to a person in medical distress. Relaying of the 'electrocardiogram' of a
patient from a moving ambulence in a remote area to a distant hospital for diagnosis and
proper medical advice was also once demonstrated by the UK hams using computer interfaced
radio via the ham radio artificial satellites ( by the year 2000, ham radio
operators around the world will be having their own home-made geo-stationary satellites.
It will be a dream-come-true for the most reliable long distance point to point ham radio
communication! ).
