Ambassador Sarek
Sarek, son of Skon, grandson of Solkar, was born in the year 2164. He graduated from the Vulcan Science Academy and pursued a career in diplomacy in which he served as Vulcan’s Ambassador to the Federation for at least 166 years! Among his professional accomplishments are the Coridan admission to the Federation, the alliance between the Federation and the Klingon Empire, negotiation of the treaty of Alpha Cygnus IX, and finally in the year 2366 (at the age of 202!) the conclusion of the negotiations on a treaty with the Legarans; negotiations which took 93 years for him to complete.
Sarek was married several times over his vast lifespan. His first wife was a Vulcan priestess named T’Rea; with whom he had a son named Sybok. After T’Rea’s death Sybok was raised by Sarek and his second wife until he was exiled from the planet Vulcan for his efforts to promote emotionalism over logic on his homeworld. After hijacking the Enterprise A in 2287, Sybok was killed by a malevolent entity trying to overtake the ship in an attempt to cross the Great Barrier into Federation space.
Sarek’s second marriage began in 2229 when he married a human school teacher named Amanda Grayson. With her he had a son named Spock, who later became somewhat of a legend on Vulcan due to his escapades as First Officer of the Enterprise. Sarek and Spock disagreed over Spock’s entry into Star Fleet, and an 18-year dispute ensued during which time the pair had a very tense and somewhat strained relationship. This changed in 2267 when Sarek was on board the Enterprise on his way to the Babel conference where he represented Vulcan in the debates over admitting Coridan into the Federation. Ambassador Sarek suffered a heart attack which resulted from a malfunction in one of his heart valves – a condition he had been recently aware of and, although he kept it from his wife and son, had convinced him to retire from his position as Ambassador. Dr. McCoy was able to perform an operation using blood donated from Spock, and an understanding was reached between father and son. Following Spock’s death in 2285, it was Sarek’s turn to save his life by convincing Kirk to bring both Spock’s body and his katra back to Vulcan where he requested the Gol High Master T’Lar to perform the fal-tor-pan, the refusion, on his son. The ceremony was successful, and Spock and Sarek would continue to enjoy a close relationship for many more years, and even work together on laying the groundwork for the Kitomer conference, which would bring about an alliance between the Federation and Klingon Empire. Their peace did not last indefinitely, however, as many years later the pair would publicly disagree over the issue of allowing the Cardassians access to Federation space, and later still over the possibility of unifying the Romulan and Vulcan people. Unfortunately this rift would go unresolved.
Sarek’s third wife was another human named Perrin. She accompanied
him on the Enterprise D when he met and solidified the treaty with the
Legarans. It was at this time that Sarek was officially diagnosed
with Bendii Syndrome, a degenerative condition that destroys a Vulcan’s
ability to maintain emotional control. Ambassador Sarek died in his
home on Vulcan, in the year 2368, due to the degenerative effects of Bendii
Syndrome. He was survived by his wife Perrin, and his son Ambassador
Spock.
