The Evil Dead is the classic low budget horror flick that should have catapulted its star, Bruce Campbell from the bowels of relative obscurity into super-stardom! Instead, this film along with its two subsequent sequels (Evil Dead 2 and Army of Darkness) have garnered somewhat of a cult following amongst horror buffs. In spite of being restricted by a shoestring budget of $350,000 the architects of this film manage to visit an inexplicable aura of impending doom upon the viewer.
The seed of fear is planted early on and germinates nicely as the story unfolds. Notwithstanding the predictability of the setting (remote mountain cabin) and plot (five teens vacationing in said cabin who inadvertently awaken evil spirits in the surrounding forest) you inevitably find yourself perched on the edge of your seat in anticipation. A healthy dose of severed cadavers combined with a glimpse of Bruce Campbell's rye humor serves to strike a perfect balance and makes The Evil Dead a genuinely frightening movie.
