Menus
File Menu
This menu allows you to select from the various file
management utilities such as creating a new document, saving files and printing.
This menu allows you to perform many of the same functions as My Computer.
- New (blank document, templates, wizards)
- Open (search the hard or floppy drive for an existing
file)
- Close (close a document)
- Save (resave a file previously saved file)
- Save As (save a file to a specific folder with a specific
name)
- Save as Web Page (converts from Word to HTML)
- Page Setup (adjust margins, portrait versus landscape,
borders, line numbers)
- Print Preview (see the document before printing it)
- Print (select pages to be printed, number of copies)
- Send To (copy document to another location)
- Exit (quit Word)
Edit menu
This menu allows you to select from the various editing such
as cut and paste (move text), copy and paste (copy text), select all, and search
and replace (useful in large documents). Many of these functions can also be
performed using the standard toolbar.
- Cut (delete selected text)
- Copy (copy selected text)
- Paste (paste deleted or copied text)
- Select All (select entire document)
- Find (locate a word)
- Replace (replace a word)
View menu
You can adjust the view according to the task at hand.
- Normal (default view)
- Web Layout (display as a web page)
- Print Layout (shows headers, footers, watermarks and
other objects not visible in Normal view)
- Toolbars (add or remove toolbars for formatting,
pictures, WordArt, has the same Customize dialog box as found in the Tools
menu)
- Document Map (opens a window showing only the major
headings, used for navigating a large document)
- Header and Footer (header and footer are not in the same
layer as most of the text, to see the header and footer you must be in
Print Layout view)
- Footnotes (same comment as headers and footers)
Insert menu
Allows you to insert page breaks, textboxes and and many
objects that are alien to Word such as pictures, equations, worksheets, charts,
sound clips, videos,... via the insert picture or object
options.
- Break (insert page and chapter breaks)
- Page Numbers (put page numbers on the document)
- Date and Time (put current date or time into the
document)
- Comment (attach a comment to selected text or graphics,
comment appears when the mouse is over the selected text or graphics)
- Footnote (add a footnote)
- Caption (automatically label figures, tables and
equations)
- Index and Tables (automatically generate an index, table
of contents or table of figures)
- Pictures (insert pictures from ClipArt, digital cameras, scanners and
other sources)
- Text Box (create a text box to highlight text, text can
be horizontal or vertical)
- File (insert a file, word, excel, graphics,...)
- Object (insert objects that are alien to
Word such as pictures, equations, worksheets, charts, sound clips, videos,...)
Format menu
Allows you to select the font family, font size, font
paragraph style, bullets style, and background. Note to format an object
such as a picture simply select the object and go to the format menu or
right-click on the object.
- Font (Choose font family, style, color and effects such
as blinking text)
- Paragraph (Set indentation and line and page break
options)
- Tabs (adjust tab amount)
- Change case (change selected text from uppercase to lowercase)
- Drop Cap (Insert a drop cap)
- Bullets and Numbering (select format for bulleted and
numbered lists)
- Borders and Shading (apply borders and shading to
selected text, horizontal lines)
- Columns (put text into multi-column format)
- Background (select background color and fill effects, for
web pages, these effects do not print)
- Style (Select and modify paragraph styles)
Tools menu
Contains tools such as spelling and grammar checkers, and
allows the user to define macros.
- Spelling and Grammar (finds spelling and grammatical
errors)
- Word Count (counts number of words in the document)
- AutoCorrect (set options for correction of spelling
errors and the formatting of tables and lists)
- Mail Merge (combine a main document and a data source to
create new personalized documents)
- Envelops and Labels (for printing addresses on envelops
and labels)
- Letter wizard (create a letter using a wizard)
- Macros (create your own command to execute a series of
actions all at once)
- Templates (organize templates)
- Customize (customize toolbars, commands and choose how
menus are displayed)
- Options (set options for viewing, printing files,
spelling and grammar checks and where Word stores files)
Table menu
Tables are a powerful method of controlling the layout of
your pages and are used for alignment and organization.
- Draw Table (use a pencil to draw tables)
- Insert (create table using a dialog box)
- Delete (remove table or specific rows, columns or cells)
- Select (select a table or part of a table)
- Merge Cells (merge selected cells)
- Split Cells (split selected cell)
- AutoFormat (choose from a variety of table formats)
- AutoFit (select how you want information formatted in the
cells)
- Convert (change text to table and back)
- Formula (perform simple math calculations on table
entries)
- Table Properties (select alignment, borders and wrapping)
