I. 4. My VW Memorabilia Collection

My VW memorabilia collection is divided into six namely: the “matchbox” sized scaled miniature diecast models; the 1/43 and larger scale diecast models; the 1/24& 1/35 scale plastic models from Tamiya, Italeri, and Guze Sangyo; the caricature/ fancy toys; the collectibles from several countries including the Philippines; and the literature from different countries.

I have about 200 VW diecast models from Matchbox of England, Hotwheels of U.S.A., Tomica of Japan, Siku of Germany, Majorette of France, Yatming of China, Playart of Hong Kong, Pauls Model Art, Vitesse, Solido, and Welly. The various models I have are: Beetles, Karmann Ghia Type 1, Kombis, Double cab pickup, Thing, Buggies, Vanagon, Eurovan, Sharan, Kubelwagen , Schimmwagen , Corrado, Golf and Sciroccos and the Concept 1. I am trying to compile and update the list of the hundreds of VW miniature diecast models made.

I also have the Beetle and theKarmann Ghia Type 1 tin toy models and the Karmann Ghia Type 3 plastic model in HO scale.

My more than 500 caricature/ fancy VW toys come mostly from China and Hong Kong. The variation here is almost endless. I have VW’s that dance, another that flap its doors, a beetle that can be a “connectable”, a beetle that transforms into a robot, models that tumble and some that flips. They vary in color, graphics, cartoon character riding on it and are either pull back, wind-up, remote control, battery operated, press-to-run, bump-n-go, push- n-go or friction powered.

I even have almost all versions of the VW Concept 1 models and toys. The actual production car does not have a definite release date yet but the toys are already in the market. Here is an indication of the popularity of the VW in popular culture.

My VW collectibles consist of: key chains, pendants, pins, perfume bottles, glass jars ,glass containers, paperweights, pencil sharpeners, soap holders, coin bank, silver craft, alarm clock, cassette tape w/ VW beetle photo in the jacket, long play record by the Limelighters, the record jacket featuring a beetle, photo frames, tissue box, crayons, pog caps, game cards, lotion dispenser, air freshener, postage stamps, etc. I own nine (9) commemorative car license plates with “VW” as my chosen personalized letters.

I have more than seventy(70) mini albums of photos of VWCP activities since 1992.

My VW literature collection consist of the following: original sales literature, original photos, books/ pocketbooks including all of the 5 Herbie issues, 200 postcards & greeting cards, repair / service manuals, after market parts catalogs, 5 VW factory spare parts manuals, 138 VW ads that appeared in the Readers Digest, including the January 1957 issue in which appeared their first VW ad in that magazine, enthusiast books and dedicated-VW magazines, some of them vintage ‘65 issues. I also have hundreds of articles, book covers, book jackets & non-VW ads featuring the VW as part of the illustration or photo. Also in the collection are general motoring, entertainment, technical, and news magazines, including the Newsweek, Time and International Business Week issues that featured the VW in the cover or as one of the featured articles inside.
