Marian & Brenna

One of the reasons that many gay men and lesbians have difficulty accepting their orientation is that they can't face the prospect of never having children. I consider myself very lucky to have two bright, healthy, energetic daughters who keep reminding me what's really important in life.

That's Marian (b. 1991) on the left, looking like an entomologist. If you have questions about any living animal or rock under the Earth, she just might have the answer for you. At the right is Brenna (b. 1993), looking like a warrior elf princess in a tree. She has swift feet, clever fingers and a warm heart. Both those photos were taken in March 2002. In the middle is an older photo, waiting for the Toronto Pride parade in 1999. Don't they look like trouble?

One of the hardest times in my life was adjusting after the girls moved 200 km away in 1998, but since then we've spent most of their long weekends, holidays and summer vacations together. Getting so much extended time together has turned into a real blessing. We all love Nature and enjoy all kinds of arts and crafts, so we never run out of interesting things to do together. This final photo was taken by Aubrey Smith not far from our cottage on May 20, 2002.

If I had to say one thing to sum up my daughters, it would be this: "They're the best!"
