Van is my middle name. It comes from my grandfather, whose full name was Silvanus. Silvanus was the Roman god of forests, with which I identify as a lover of trees and the woods. It is a name handed down in my family for generations.
My family, which was originally called Weibel, emigrated from Switzerland to New England in the middle of the 18th century. One family line changed its name to Waffle and moved to Ontario around 1820, so we have lived in this part of Canada for a long time. I also have English, German and Irish roots.
Aubrey Smith took this picture of me and my daughters near our beloved Lake Fletcher on May 20, 2002.
