The World Wide Web (www) is a key network service on the Internet.Tim
Berner's-Lee a pioneer in the www opened a great potential to the
world. He was working at CERN (European Laboratory for Particle
Physics) in Switzerland at that time. The www brings together text
,pictures & sound to web pages & eases publishing of
information on the net in a visually appealing manner. Before the
www the Internet experience was text based & quite plain. The
web which is based on the Hyper Text Transfer Protocol (HTTP)
gives us a graphical user interface (GUI) which was not
previously available as there were only text browsers then, i.e
Character user interface (CUI).
The first graphical browser for the www was MOSAIC developed by
Marc Ndreessen & a group of student programmers at the
National Centre for Supercomputing Applications (NCSA) University
of ILLINIOS.Soon after this the www consortium (W3C) was founded
by Tim Berners- Lee & Al Vezza which set standards for the
web. A programming language for the internet "JAVA" was
released which was developed by James Gosling at Sun Microsystems.
JAVA made web pages literally come to life & made the
browsing experience realistic. Soon there was competition for
JAVA in the form of ActiveX.
JAVA vs ActiveX
JAVA was specificly designed with security concerns in mind.JAVA
applets are interpreted by the JAVA Virtual Machine &
controls access to system resources.ActiveX controls have to
register themselves with the Windows Registry & have to be
executed as native Windows applications.JAVA is the master of all
trades.ActiveX is the master of 1:Win 32.
A quite recent addition to the web technology is Virtual Reality
modelling language (VRML).This allows the creation of a 3-D world
with unlimited possibilities. It has a variety of applications in
Science like crystal structure, design & in entertainment like
a 3-D chat environment. There are browsers which support voice
recognition & allow browsing the net without typing.
In conclusion we see Internet technology increasing rapidly, but
will we see a shift from legacy Operating Systems (OS) to Thin
Client Operating Systems in the comming years? Also will there be
a drastic change from Operating Systems to no Operating Systems i.e
a really user friendly OS where interaction is maximum &
learining is minimum.
