How American Friends of Edinburgh Can Help Ian R. M. Mowat, Librarian to the University As indicated above, you already do - and the University in general and the Library in particular is enormously grateful for the backing it receives from its American friends (with or without a capital F and where or not they are graduates). But as University administrators throughout the world often lament, libraries are bottomless pits when comes to expenditure! No library has ever had enough funds to buy all the books, journals and manuscripts it wants and to these needs nowadays are added the additional requirements for computer equipment, electronic databases and all the training required to keep staff familiar with the latest technology and its applications. Edinburgh University Library wants to retain its place as one of the world's great libraries. Indeed it wants to improve upon its present position. We are happy where we are but far from satisfied! For those who wish to work with us or to contribute to achieving this success and who want recognition opportunities for involvement with a success story the list is never-ending! The headings below are amongst our current priorities. In addition, new demands and old opportunities keep occurring and re-occurring. Support is both welcomed and appreciated. 1. Science and Engineering Library Learning and Information Centre. $10,000,000 is required for the second phase. 2. Book Plate appeal. Any contributions of $50 to the general book fund are attributed to specific books which are identified with a special Friends book plate, incorporating the name of the donor. 3. Digital Scanner. At present, the Library's Special Collections needs a digital scanner to allow a permanent electronic copy of any document scanned to be preserved. The cost of a scanner would be $22,000. 4. Art Work. $100,000 is sought for art work to enhance both the Main Library and the proposed SELLIC. 5. Cataloguing projects. To continue the specialist work of electronically recataloguing the older books in the library. Any contribution to costs which will exceed $500,000 would be most welcome. |
