  HELLO ALUMNI
This issue of newsletter was intended to be ready in March. But for various reasons, the date of publication was delayed. My apology. We still plan to bring out the next issue of newsletter in June/July.

The date for the next alumni dinner and Annual General Meeting of the Association will be on Saturday 21 October 2000. Lorna MacKellar, Secretary/Treasurer will organize the dinner. Further details about the dinner will appear in the next issue of newsletter.

You will read an interesting article contributed by a Dick Vet graduate in this newsletter. We hope to receive more articles from alumni and appreciate your feedback and comments to make this newsletter a success.

Very best wishes,

Ven Yee Foo
President

PICTURES TAKEN AT THE LAST ALUMNI DINNER
The last alumni dinner of the Association was held on Wednesday 27 October 1999 at an Italian restaurant in the suburb of Leichardt, Sydney. It was an enjoyable evening for all attended. The following photographs captured the mood of the alumni dinner:

The reprints or computer image files of the photographs are available to the alumni on request. A nominal charge applies and payable with unused postal stamps in equivalent amount. On Internet, you may click a picture to get its enlarged version which has better picture quality.

The Association archives the pictures. If you have any pictures of previous NSW alumni get-togethers, e.g. the 1987 dinner and 1998 Edinburgh Rugby visit. please send us some copies. Thanks.

  NEXT ALUMNI DINNER
The next alumni dinner of the Association will be on Saturday 21 October 2000, three weeks after the closing ceremony of Sydney Olympics. Please make a note of this date in your diary in case you may be able to attend. Lorna MacKellar, Secretary/Treasurer of the Association will give us more details regarding the venue. cost and programme of the dinner. All alumni are welcome to attend and we will be very pleased to meet you at this annual function.

NEXT AGM
The Annual General Meeting (AGM) will be held about 15 minutes before the alumni dinner on 21 October 2000 mainly to elect the president. Members are welcome to propose amendments to the constitution already published in the NSW sub-web site of http://www.edalumni.com. A copy of the constitution will be made available to you on request.

  MEMBERSHIP FEES
According to section 9 of the constitution, A member pays the Association an annual membership fee of $20 or alternatively, a biennial fee of $30. We shall start to ask members for membership fees when we send the next issue of newsletter in June/July.

  CIRCULATION OF NEWSLETTERS
Last December, we printed and sent about 250 copies of newsletters to alumni in New South Wales and ACT. The total cost of postage and printing is about $200. There were 10 returned mail because of wrong addresses. The actual number could be as high as 60. The exercise is oneoff and not sustainable because of its high cost.

On the basis of user pay, non-members were asked to indicate if they want to continue receiving the newsletters. Annual subscription fees applies to alumni who preferred printed copies instead of the reading it on the web site. Six alumni sent their yearly subscription fees, $4.50 each in 10 unused Australian postage stamps (one of whom did not leave his/her name or address). Thank you very much. It does help.

We managed to add 10 new members to the list. The total membership of the Association is 54 with one from ACT.

Our circulation list for this issue comprises of 40 hard copies and 35 notified by email for reading the newsletter from the web site http://www.edalumni.com.

  WEB SITE
The web site http://www.edalumni.com requires improvements especially in its graphic presentation. We appreciate any feedback, comments and assistance from our alumni.

COLOURED PENCILS AND COMPUTER ARTS
Ms Peggy Stamm, psnomore@aol.com, a comtemporary artist based in California, USA kindly sent the following art works (Copyright Peggy Stamm 2000) to enrich the content of this newsletter and her best wishes to New South Wales alumni:

The picture on the left was drawn with fine coloured pencils. The little girl protected by the lion is brave now as she knows no harm will come from the howling wolf in the background. The picture above is a fine piece of computer art painted with a mouse. It shows a tranquil setting at night where dreams are made...

DICK VETS RULE OK IN THE HUNTER VALLEY OF NSW, AUSTRALIA !
W. P. Howey BVMS MACVSc MRCVS GradDipEd JP

The first 50 years of Veterinary Practice in Scone in the rich Upper Hunter Valley of NSW has been 'ruled' by graduates of the 'Dick Vet'!

The late Andrew Murray Bain (circa 1936) established the first permanent veterinary service in 1950. This followed a distinguished career in Herefordshire, Army War Service (Palestine, North Africa, 1940 - 1946), Claiborne Stud, Lexington, Kentucky USA (1946), and Alton Lodge Stud, NZ (1947 - 1950). Murray became one of the most illustrious equine veterinarians of his generation with a global reputation in equine reproduction. For 24 years (1950 - 1974) he pioneered veterinary practice in an area heavily populated with thoroughbred horses, equivalent in geographic size to the 'Home Counties' of England.

W. P. (Bill) Howey (1966) joined Murray in 1967 after 1 year in NW Ireland. John Morgan (1962) arrived in Scone on 'shuttle' from Newmarket in 1968 and settled permanently with his family in 1969. Angus Campbell
(1969) followed Bill and John to Australia in 1972. For the next 20 years, the practice developed into the largest single entity of its type in Australia and arguably the Southern Hemisphere. At one stage (1988) there were 20 veterinarians and 48 staff associated with Morgan, Howey and Fraser and Partners. The practice serviced almost 10,000 thoroughbred broodmares located on over 80 properties in the Hunter Valley. This amounted to approximately one quarter of the mares in the Australian Thoroughbred Stud Book.
Today the practice operates very successfully as Scone Veterinary Hospital with a large veterinary and ancillary staff. John Morgan has retired to 'elegant consultancy work' in the Hunter Valley. Angus Campbell will soon resume his postponed sailing career from his Rozelle, Sydney Harbour base marina. Bill Howey succeeded Dr. Tom Hungerford and Dr. Douglas Bryden as the third Director of the Post Graduate Foundation (PGF) in Veterinary Science of the University of Sydney on 3rd. April 2000. The late Murray Bain was passionately fond of this organisation and largely instrumental in its inception in 1965.

The PGF is the 'custodian home' for the Edinburgh University Rugby Club Plaque presented to the NSW Alumnus Association in 1998.

CUSTODIAN HOME FOR UNIVERSITY PLAQUE
At the dinner to welcome the Rugby Team from Edinburgh University on 18 August 1998, the captain of the team presented a University Plaque to the New South Wales group. The plaque was handed over to Mr Bill Howey(BVMS 1966) for custody in February 2000 (shown in picture below). Its new home is at Level 2, Building 22, Conference Centre, Regimental Crescent, University of Sydney 2006 overlooking No. 2 oval of Sydney University Rugby club, one of the oldest in Australia.

Bill Howey played for the R(D)VC 3rd. XV in the 1960's. A very famous captain of Sydney University Rugby Club in the late 1880's was J.A.K.Shaw whose club 'mementos' are mounted in the grandstand bar at No. 1 oval. Bill now resides in his house at Scone, NSW - 2 Shaw Street. His son Hugh plays rugby for the Sydney University Club and was treasurer in 1998.

  ALUMNI NEWS
Dr Mary McCulloch finished her assignment with the University of Sydney in April. She wrote an email to say good bye: "Sorry for not being in touch sooner. I am not sure where the months have flown to? I finish work tomorrow, and then do some travelling before I head home with Bob at the end of May. All the best for the future endeavours of the alumni association!"

Dr Paul Luey retired from his position at the Dean office, Department of Social Sciences, University of New South Wales last year. Happy retirement. I catched up with him for a lunch at the fish market of Sydney few months ago. The fishermen's wharf in San Francisco may be for tourists. If you are looking for a fishermen's wharf for the people, you find it here in Sydney and arguably the best in the world!.

Mr Bill Howey (BVM&S. 66) became the Director of the Post Graduate Foundation (PGF) in Veterinary Science of the University of Sydney in April 2000. My information of the Foundation is somewhat sketchy. I understand that it is funded by its membership and it organizes seminars for the Vets in various townships in Australia. (Added on 19 May 2000: Bill just told me about a fine web site of PGF http://www.pgf.edu.au which contains useful information.)

Mr John Crichton (Geography) wrote a couple of emails from Orange, New South Wales. Our departments in the University were next to each other at Drummond Street and therefore we may have crossed each other. It is always nice to talk about the good old days.

Dr Elliot P Gilbert (BSc) completed his PhD in The Australian National University and now lives in the Chicago area doing research in Chemical Physics at the Argonne National Laboratory. His web site is . http://www.pns.anl.gov/sad/Elliot.html

Editor: Please write to us and send us your news when you have time. Thanks.
