I think the 242GT with B230E were made around 1980 to 1981, and the first
240GLs and GLEs with that motor didn't appear until 1983.

I belive that they had no place for the sparewheel as well. (Both sides).
Instead they had a aircompressor and a spare that you had to fill up with the compressor!
I thougt that the only color was silvermetallic, but maybe this was the swedish market.
I think all the 242 GT:s are going to be rare in the future i wish i had one...

For me, Volvo air conditioning has once again become an oxymoron.
This '94 854 (27k) is in its third summer. The first two seasons
the system performed flawlessly, providing ample cooling under some
pretty high heat/humidity conditions.
Yesterday I noticed that the system was cycling off for long enough
periods to permit really warm air to come through the vents. Today
the system is still running, but not producing much cool air.
Compressor is making noise so I'll leave it off until the dealer
can check it out.
On another note, thanks to the repley (I forgot who) regarding 850
carpet. I noticed a "bald spot" in an area not subject to wear.
Someone on the list had a similar experience and had the carpet
replaced under warranty. Mine was as well. Seems there was a bad
run of carpet used in some '94's. The color match is very good -
even after two years.

Had the chance to visually compare a Garrett TBO3 (AirResearch) turbo
against and a Mitsubishi TD05 (has Volvo name cast on it). I have wondered
for ages why Volvo changed to Mitsubishi and if it was magically different
to the Garrett.
They are so similar its incredible, nearly the same dimensions everywhere
(inlet outlet length width weight, turbo to manifold attachment, wastegate
config.). It bolted straight onto my spare older style manifold (flat
rectangular), the newer style manifold has a circular locator which
intersects the rectangular flange. No big problem attaching a Mitsub to
the older manifold, just needs a circular copper ring/gasket of right
thickness to fill in the round diameter on the turbo flange.
One difference was the inlet compressor wheel - the Garrett had the more
high tech looking curved blade geometry where the Mitsubishi had the old
style plain straight blades.
Gossip/chat - apparently the manufacturers found the Garrett style curved
blades tend to 'thrash' the incoming air, creating extra heat and a small
loss of rotational efficiency I presume, while the plain Mitsubishi style
ones are (15% ?) more efficient.
I'm in no hurry now to imagine updating to a Mitsub as a priority, seems
the newer computer control of wastegate etc. is the difference. Anyone
actually compared the two 'on the road' or got more technical information
especially on the cannister which sits on the outlet of the compressor
side?

I presume you are talking about a stick? If so, chances are high that
the wire running from the relay to the solenoid valve on the overdrive
has broken or fallen off. To engage the overdrive, the solenoid must
be engaged. Second choices are the relay itself (in the center
console) or the solenoid.
Now, most of the Laycock O/D Volvos have the solenoid operated
by a relay... but the M410 in my 164 is rather different. The
steering column mounted lever controls the juice, which then
flows down a wire to a large switch atop the transmission
(which is closed only when 4th gear is selected) and then out
of the switch to the solenoid. Simple! Course the "OD" light
remains on if the OD is selected (but not engaged) in the lower
gears.

850 TDI has been available in Finland for a while, a couple
of months, at least. Too bad it's so much more expensive than
the base model. The other new 96 models are 850 AWD and
850 low-pressure turbo (200 hp).
The 850 TDI has 140 hp, the same as 850 10V. I don't
remember how much it consumes fuel, but two Finns tried
to far you can drive with just a tankfull of diesel (72
litres). The started from Helsinki and went to
Travemunde, Germany by ferry and then they headed to Italy.
They ran out of diesel in Cattolica, Italy after about 1400
kilometers. The fuel consumption was less than 4 liters
per 100 kilometers (that's how we compare fuel economy).
I don't know about MPG's. Anyway, that's about 850 miles
per tankfull of diesel.
Of course they tried to maximize the fuel economy in every
possible way. On the way back they had to refill once,
but they also had a chance to drive fast on the autobahns
in Germany.
I bet the 850 TDI is going to be very popular here, since
diesel is so much cheaper than gasoline here (3.60 vs. 5.50
FIM/liter).
