Yes, I think this is right.  This is one of those areas like
engagement rings or wedding expenses where a lot of emotional
demands are placed on people.  "It's about family first, and
the price second"... the implication that if you don't buy a
house that you can only afford with a 30 year mortgage, then
you somehow aren't a good provider for your family.  Rampant
consumerism is in place here, as elsewhere.
