3M Resource List

Despite the popularity of the SCA and armored combat, finding the right materials sometimes takes more than just a phone call. Often retailers aren't familiar with the materials we need for armor and other things. Below is an evolving list of places in the Three Mountains Barony where one can find these unique materials. If you know of places that you just couldn't do without mail me with the sources.

You may want to check with your local newspaper agency pressman. Many of the inks used for newspaper production come in barrelss that are great for armoring.

Other places you could check would be Industrial detergent supply company or linen services for cloth diapers & or uniforms. Many of the detergents they use come in the same type of plastic barrel.

Some of these places will give then away dirt cheap if not for free as they tend to get an abundance of emptys sitting about.

If you do go with plastic I highly recommend considering covering it with cloth or leather. Some plastic armor, although from 15 feet away look okay to decent, may also look like a bad Road Warrior flashback or the Storm trooper from hell. It is unfortunate but I have seen them. Other have been great all the way around though they still have the non period look of plastic up close. Those that have been covered with cloth or leather tend to look great regardless of proximity.

I got mine from the local farmer's co-op, where the empty feed barrels were being sold to be cut into watering troughs for horses.

In Pittsburgh, we were getting ours from Penn Barrel.
Check your local yellow pages. Also, check with your local car wash- they get their detergent in barrels.

I'm trying to remember back to when I worked at an industrial plant in the purchasing department. I seem to remember that local waste disposal companies would sell us clean, empty drums. Or, call up a local industrial plant and ask them for ones they're going to throw away. Mine was marked for the dumpster because it had a crack in it... but it was still perfect for armor and it was the nice thick type. All I can say about where to get a supply of plastic has already been said but I do have a few things to say,

  1. Avoid PVC, try to avoid ABS, they both give off really toxic fumes when you get them hot enough to bend.
  2. And get a heat gun, there are many people who use a torch to get the plastic soft enough to bend but it takes a few tries to get it right. You should be able to find one at Wal-Mart.

Retrieved several from the local land fill where I lived. They are set aside for recycling. Cost me a buck each (choice of colors too!).
